‘Hand over 17 resettlement colonies to MCD’
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 22
The Delhi Government is flouting the central government’s order asking it to hand over17 resettlement colonies to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and to sanction Rs 20 crore for their development, a BJP councillor and member of the Standing Committee, Vijender Gupta, has alleged.

Addressing a press conference yesterday, he alleged that the central government had framed a policy in 1988 to hand over the resettlement colonies to the corporation from the Delhi Government for their maintenance and development. The policy was framed after an epidemic outbreak in the Capital when these colonies and jhuggi clusters on the bank of the Yamuna were flooded. Thereafter, 44 resettlement colonies were transferred to the MCD for maintenance work. The government sanctioned Rs 65 crore every year for the maintenance of these colonies. Earlier, these colonies were looked after by the Slum Wing, then a part of the DDA, Mr Vijender Gupta said.

He said that 17 other resettlement colonies were developed after demolishing jhuggi clusters and these colonies were being looked after by the Delhi Government. There was no water supply, no electricity and sewage system in these colonies. The Delhi Government should hand over these colonies to the general wing of the corporation and the government should sanction Rs 20 crore for the maintenance of these colonies.

In a letter written to the Chief Minister of Delhi, Mr Vijender Gupta demanded that the colonies should be handed over to the corporation for providing civic services so as to save the lives of thousands of JJ dwellers relocated in Holambi Kalan, Holambi Khurd, Bhalswa, Molar Bandh and Bakkarwala. If the colonies were not handed over to the corporation, the BJP would make it an issue, he warned.
