Chandigarh restrict Mohali to 194 Chandigarh, May 20 Brief scores: Chandigarh — 268 and 15 for no loss. Mohali — 194 (Simranjit 65, Gauravjit 25, Nikhil 26, Naresh 3 for 64 and Karanveer 3 for 67). Roller Skating Parminder Kaur has won gold medal in the Rink Race II, in the above 14 category, during the second Bhavan Hawk Roller Skating Championship. She has also won silver medal in roller hockey. In the 10 to 12 year age group, Jyoti Pannu won silver medal in Rink Race I and II, besides a silver in roller hockey. In the junior roller hockey, Harattan Singh, Robinpreet Singh and Gurpreet Singh won silver medals. The two-day championship held at Bhavan Vidyalaya, concluded on May 19. KALKA St Bir girls excel District champion softball team of St. Bir School, Kalka, won the fist position in the sub-junior section (girls) of the State Softball Championship held at Rohtak on May 17 and 18. Today morning, when the team arrived here by the Himalayan Queen, it was welcomed by school Principal Kulbir Rana, teachers, staff, students and their parents. Members of the team were garlanded at the railway station. Thereafter, they were taken to the school in a procession. Swati, captian of the team, said the team played with determination and was able to win the championship. The boys’ team of the school had secured the second position in the sub-junior section of the state championship. Both the teams have qualified for the National Softball Championship to be held at Mathura. PARWANOO Snooker toruney The snooker tournaments that started here last Sunday, concluded on Monday in Hotel WindsMoor at Parwanoo. The tournaments were conducted by the Snooker Association of Parwanoo. About 50 participants from Parwanoo, Pinjore, Kalka and surrounding areas took part in the tournaments. Ish Kapoor, State Organiser of the Congress Seva Dal, was the chief guest of the concluding function. Surendar Verma, DSP, Parwanoo, and Pradeep Sharma, regional manager of Nerolac Paints, were special invitees. The final match (singles) was played between Sushil Jal Puri and Bittu Jaswal. Sushil Jalpuri was declared winner. In the doubles final, Manoj Jain and Amit Jain of Jain Brothers of Kalka were declared winners. |
Old scoring pattern is back in badminton Chandigarh, May 20 As per the guidelines received here by the Chandigarh Badminton Association, there will be 15 points in men’s (singles) games and 11 points in women’s (singles) games. Doubles games (for both men and women) will be of 15 points each. The scoring pattern will be used throughout the Olympic qualifying period that started on May 1. The play will go on continuously from the first service till the end of the match, except for an interval of 90 seconds between the first and the second game and then not exceeding five minutes will be allowed between the second and the third game. The rules also prohibit players from seeking outside guidance during the match. Meanwhile, as per the latest rankings announced by the Badminton Association of India, Mandeep Singh, a 15-year-old boy from Chandigarh, has been accorded the 10th rank in the sub-junior singles. Saurav Kapoor of Haryana, who plays at Panchkula, however, got the 12th rank. Nitin Dahiya of Haryana got the 14th rank in Midget event. Akshit Mahajan, a student of Hansraj Public school, Sector 6, Panchkula, was accorded the third rank in the under 10 events. Akshit is son of former state badminton player Jatinder Mahajan. In the junior boys section, Mayank Behl of Jalandhar got the ninth rank. Badminton experts were, however, worried over the falling standards of the game in the region. Players from Chandigarh, Panchkula and other parts of the region could not rank among top 20 players in men singles, women singles events. Most of the top rank holders were from Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. A former national-level badminton player has appreciated the recent experiment undertaken by the Haryana Badminton Association under which Hafed will be involved in efforts to promote the game. Under the new scheme, Hafed will have a badminton academy where the financial part will be taken care of by the corporation itself. |
Chandigarh beat Srinagar in volleyball Chandigarh, May 20 In the second match the Halwara area got the better of the Hindon area 25-10,25-15 and then defeated the Ambala area 25-14,25-23 . The Adampur area came out on top against the Jammu Area, 27-25, 25-14 and then defeated the Bathinda area 25-15, 25-16. In another match Srinagar defeated Jammu 25-18 ,25-19. |
