Old scoring pattern is back in badminton
Arvind Katyal

Chandigarh, May 20
Succumbing to the pressure of Asian badminton superpowers, whose players had earlier advocated for switching back to the old scoring format, finally the International Badminton Federation has okayed the proposal.

As per the guidelines received here by the Chandigarh Badminton Association, there will be 15 points in men’s (singles) games and 11 points in women’s (singles) games. Doubles games (for both men and women) will be of 15 points each. The scoring pattern will be used throughout the Olympic qualifying period that started on May 1.

The play will go on continuously from the first service till the end of the match, except for an interval of 90 seconds between the first and the second game and then not exceeding five minutes will be allowed between the second and the third game. The rules also prohibit players from seeking outside guidance during the match.

Meanwhile, as per the latest rankings announced by the Badminton Association of India, Mandeep Singh, a 15-year-old boy from Chandigarh, has been accorded the 10th rank in the sub-junior singles. Saurav Kapoor of Haryana, who plays at Panchkula, however, got the 12th rank. Nitin Dahiya of Haryana got the 14th rank in Midget event. Akshit Mahajan, a student of Hansraj Public school, Sector 6, Panchkula, was accorded the third rank in the under 10 events. Akshit is son of former state badminton player Jatinder Mahajan.

In the junior boys section, Mayank Behl of Jalandhar got the ninth rank. Badminton experts were, however, worried over the falling standards of the game in the region. Players from Chandigarh, Panchkula and other parts of the region could not rank among top 20 players in men singles, women singles events. Most of the top rank holders were from Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

A former national-level badminton player has appreciated the recent experiment undertaken by the Haryana Badminton Association under which Hafed will be involved in efforts to promote the game. Under the new scheme, Hafed will have a badminton academy where the financial part will be taken care of by the corporation itself.
