Rs 50 lakh for repair of watercourses in each district Sonepat, May 2 The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Balwan Singh, told mediapersons here today that the authorities of the Command Area Development Authority (CADA) and the irrigation department have been asked to identify such watercourses and undertake the work for their repair as the government was committed to ensuring the supply of canal water at the tailend villages and the fields of the farmers. He also said that the state government has also constituted the committees comprising senior officers at each district for monitoring the repair work of the watercourses in their districts. He said that the state government has directed the irrigation department authorities to undertake the work of desilting the drains, canals, distributaries and the minors in their areas. Steps should also be taken to repair the ring ‘bundhs’ around the villages to check their inundation during the monsoon. Referring to the ‘Swajaldhara’ programme, launched by the state government for providing drinking water to the people of each village, the DC asked the district officials to mobilise the gram panchayats to deposit 10 per cent amount of the cost of the projects so that the work should be taken in hand for the purpose. The state government, he said, would grant 90 per cent of the remaining amount of this project. The DC said that the state government would construct sports stadium in two villages of each block and set up one model village in each assembly constituency of the
state. ITI students sit on dharna Around two dozen students of local industrial training institute (ITI) staged a dharna in Nagar Parishad Park and later demonstrated in front of the residence of the Deputy Commissioner against the indifferent attitude of the ITI authorities in distributing their course certificates to them. They alleged that they had completed one-year computer course sponsored by Tata Infoteck from August 2001 to July 2002 and paid all fees, but they were not being given the certificates despite repeated request to the ITI authorities.
