Top sportspersons nominated for Hero Sports Awards

Chess master Vishwanathan Anand, cricket stars Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid and tennis ace Mahesh Bhupathi have been nominated for the Hero Indian Sports’ Best Sportsman of the Year Award, which will be presented at an impressive function at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday evening.

For the Best Sportswoman of the Year Award, shooter Anjali Ved Pathak, athletes Anju George and K M Beenamol and chess champ S Vijayalakshmi have been nominated.

For various other awards, a number of outstanding sportspersons and sports teams have been nominated. They include the men’s cricket, women’s hockey, kabaddi and football teams; Parthiv Patel (cricket), Harikrishna (chess), Shiv Kapur (golf) and Ronak Pandit (shooting); Sania Mirza (tennis), Koneru Humpy and Dronavali Harika (chess) and Joshna Chinnappa; Anju George, K M Beenamol.

44 women to participate in wrestling championship

As many as 44 women wrestlers in 22 weight categories of three different age groups have been selected for final trials to select a final wrestling squad, which will participate in 3-day Nation Women Wrestling Championship to be held at Cochin from May 23 to 25.

According to the district sports officer, V S Dalal, before the final selection, these wrestlers will attend a 3-week training camp at Ch Bharat Singh memorial Sports School, Nidani in Jind District. Following are the probables in different age groups and weight categories:

Rapidfire knocks by Ansul Lamba (92) and Suresh Tanwar (79 n o) guided Air Sahara to an eight-wicket victory against Food Corporation of India and entered the quarter-final of the Shera Pandit Memorial Cricket Tournament at the Mohan Meakin ground. Ansul Lamba was named the man of the match.

Scores: FCI: 195 for 9 in 40 overs (Naveen Negi 45, Paras Dogra 38, Akash Malhotra 35, Dinesh Yadav 4 for 27, Mahender Pal Singh 3 for 35).

Gyan Bharti lose

Ashok Malhotra Cricket Academy defeated Gyan Bharti South Delhi Academy by five runs during the latter’s tour of Kolkata.

Dileep stars in Shastri Club’s victory

Dileep TT played an all-round role (3 for 37 and 82 n o) and Sandeep Yadav cracked an unbeaten half century to help Lal Bahadur Shastri Club defeat Delhi Administration by nine wickets and entered the semi-final of the second Rajdhani Cup Cricket Tournament at the Najafgarh Sports Club ground. Dileep TT was declared the man of the match.

Scores: Delhi Administration: 158 for 7 in 35 overs. Lal Bahadur Shastri Club: 162 for 1 in 25 overs

Air Force advance

Indian Air Force defeated Delhi Administration by seven wickets and entered the quarter-final of the Millennium Cup Cricket Tournament at th Palam ground. Scores: Delhi Administration: 96 all out in 32 overs (Ombir Singh 26, Karmakar 3 for 23, Pankaj 2 for 11).

Indian Air Force: 100 for 3 in 27.1 overs (PMS Reddy 58, Satish Upadhaya 36 n o, Anand Singh 2 for 12).

Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan win

Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan defeated R P Academy by eight wickets in the first Prabhawati Devi World Sports Trophy Under-19 Cricket Tournament at the Bharat Nagar ground. Robin Bisth, who socred an unbeaten 66, was named the man of the match.

Parth to lead Delhi

Parth Wadia will lead the Delhi skating team in the National Skating Championship to be held in Kolkata from May 4 for 8.

ONGC to meet FCI in Sood cricket final

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) will take on Food Corporation of India (FCI) in the final of the 13th All-India Om Nath Sood Memorial Cricket Tournament to be played at the Khalsa College ground on Wednesday.

President of the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee S Paramjit Singh will be the chief guest while guests of honour will be Dilbagh Singh and Sunil Khanna.
