Top medical experts want ‘carcinogenic’ asbestos
phased out
Satish Misra
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 24
Leading medical experts and other organisations dealing with occupational health have demanded that asbestos should be phased out from the country, as its continuous use in different industrial segments, particularly in the construction industry, was hazardous to health.

Addressing an interactive session here last week, Dr T. K. Joshi of LNJP Hospital said that India needed to phase out the use of asbestos, as there was overwhelming evidence of it being highly carcinogenic.

The interactive session on health hazards of asbestos was held in the background of a media blitz by the Rs 2,000 crore asbestos industry, which went on to claim that white chrysotile asbestos that is being imported from Canada was safe and was being handled safely by its members. Though over 20 countries have already banned asbestos, the Centre has been dragging its feat on the issue, Dr Joshi pointed out.

Contradicting a claim of a certain section of the industry that white asbestos was “safe”, Dr Joshi said all types of asbestos were among the Type A category of carcinogens identified by the WHO.

It was also not true that banning of asbestos would cause an economic damage as alternatives in the form of asbestos substitute were either already available or were being developed that could effectively replace the hazardous substance, the LNJP Hospital expert asserted.

The senior Pulmonology Consultant to the Apollo Hospital, Dr Avdhesh Bansal, said exposure to asbestos could cause two extremely painful, irreversible and untreatable cancers, known in medical parlance as mesothelioma and asbestosis.

Dr Bansal said that once either of these manifested themselves, the patient died within 1 to 2 years.

An exposure of over six months to asbestos was risky as this could result in cancer even after a gap of 20 years. That is why, workers in the construction industry and others engaged in the asbestos industry carried a risk of developing cancer in a period of 20 to 25 years, he said, adding that the country was really sitting on a time bomb as mesothelioma and asbestosis could assume epidemic proportions in the coming years.

Mr Harsh Jaitli of Participatory Research in Asia (PRIA), a NGO that has been actively campaigning
against dumping of asbestos in India, regretted that the hazards of
asbestos were not receiving enough public and media attention as occupational health issues did not
make news.

Much before the Bhopal gas disaster in 1984, a number of workers had died of MIC exposure in the factory but this had generally been ignored by the mass media, he observed.

ONGC power into Sood Cricket semis
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, April 24
Deadly bowling displays by left-arm spinner Rajiv Rathore (3 for 22) and skipper Gautam Vadera (1 for 3) and a dashing half century knock by Radhey Shyam (58, 1x7, 7x4, 69b) helped Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) beat Vaijayanti Devi Academy (Agra) by seven wickets and entered the semi-final of the 13th All-India Om Nath Sood Memorial Cricket Tournament at the Khalsa College ground on Thursday.

ONGC won the toss and elected to field. The Vaijayanti Academy batsmen struggled to cope up with the class bowling of ONGC. Though opener Rajesh Gupta put up a brave front, scoring 26 runs off 27 balls with five fours, the other batsmen caved in like a pack of cards as the Agra team struggled at 6 for 83. But a 62-run seventh-wicket partnership between H S Sodhi (37) and Lalit Verma (27) enabled Vaijayanti Academy post a respectable score of 162 in 35.2 overs.

In reply, ONGC took just 23 overs to race to victory as their solid batting lineup did not need much exertion to gather quick runs.

Khalsa College physical education director Praveen Kaur presented the Pepsi man of the match award to Rajiv Rathore.

Scores: Vaijayanti Devi Academy: 162 in 35.2 overs (H S Sodhi 37, Lalit Verma 27, Rajesh Gupta 26, Gautam Vadera 1 for 3, Rajiv Rathore 3 for 22, Feroze Gyas 2 for 44).
