Our Sports Reporter

Chandigarh, April 24
Promising tennis players of the city, including Tushar Liberhan, Chhatwinder Singh, Sanam K Singh, and Shiva Sangwan, have brought pride to Chandigarh for their inclusion in the new National Tennis Academy launched by the All India Tennis Association (AITA) at Gurgaon. The AITA had entered into a joint venture with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to promote tennis in the country on professional lines by tying up with a permanent corporate sponsor for tennis. In order to give fillip to tennis in the country, the AITA came up with the idea to set up a tennis academy for boys and girls below the age of 18.

According to the CLTA, there will be a one-year contract whereby trainees will be given free lodging, boarding and training in India and abroad.

Tushar Liberhan, a former Asia under-14 champion, has also played in a number of ITF tournaments. He has been the winner of the AITA sub-junior meets. Tushar’s father told Chandigarh Tribune that Tushar had joined a rigorous 15-day coaching camp at the academy under the guidance of coach Akhtar Ali. He said, Tushar had finished his Class X examinations, and sending him to Delhi for a year won’t be a big problem.

Apart from the above mentioned tennis players, Jatin Bishnoi and Vijayant Malik, who play from Haryana but practise in Chandigarh, might also be included in the AITA academy.

Sunil Kumar, a former national champion, currently in Chandigarh for a few days told this correspondent that the academy would be a big stepping stone for the budding youngsters. The academy would provide them more exposure than was available at Chandigarh, he added.

Police to maintain ruffian register
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 24
To keep a tab on persons whose names figure in non-cognizable offences, the Chandigarh Police will now be maintaining their record in ruffian register at police stations and other units.

The ruffian register will be in addition to the 25 different registers maintained in police stations.

Entering date in the ruffian register will be at the discretion of the Station House Officers (SHOs). Information about any person, whose name figures in first information report (FIR), a non-cognizable offence or a complaint, could be entered in the register, said a police official. The register would contain information about age, physical description, relation, reference of name in FIR, DDR or complaints and remarks.

The decision was taken after the inspection of different police stations by the Inspector General of Police (IGP). It would not be necessary to keep a surveillance of the persons whose name had been entered in the register. The register would be used as a data bank to supply background material for the opening of personal files and history files.

The issue was also discussed at a recent meeting of the Sub-Divisional Officers (SDPOs) and SHOs, chaired by the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP). It has been clearly specified that the ruffian register would be used as an internal police document. All officials concerned have been asked to complete the ruffian register by the first week of the next month.
