Awareness camp on cancer prevention
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 22
With more than 80 per cent of cancer patients seeking medical help at an advanced stage, a lecture and awareness camp on prevention and early detection of the disease was organised at The Tribune here today.

The lecture, delivered by a team of doctors from an NGO, Global Cancer Concern India, was organised by the Tribune Employees Union. The General Manager of The Tribune, Mr R.N. Gupta, inaugurated the camp and lauded the efforts of the union in organising such activities for the welfare of the employees of the newspaper. The Additional General Manager, Mr O.P. Arora, was also present on the occasion.

A team of doctors comprising Dr Sandeep S. Chhatwal, Dr K.S. Behgal and Dr Mohit Bansal, gave a detailed lecture on prevention, symptoms and early detection of cancer, which accounts for the death of 12 per cent of the world’s population. They said the situation in the developing world was much more grim, as lack of awareness amongst the public and scant health facilities compounded the problem.

“While amongst women there is maximum prevalence of breast and cervix cancer, men suffered from lung and oral cancer,” informed Dr Chhatwal. He stressed the need for timely treatment of pre cancerous lesions through early detection.

Ms Savita Sodhi, General Manager (North) of Global Cancer Concern India, said simple lifestyle changes could go a long way in prevention and early detection of cancer. She said giving up smoking, alcohol, betel and guthka chewing could check lung and oral cancer to a great extent.

Dr Chhatwal said symptoms like any lump in the body, change in colour of mole or wart, unexpected loss of weight, sore wound, change in voice and low grade temperature for a long period should be thoroughly investigated. “Western dietary habits like consumption of excessive fat and red meat were also some of the reasons for cancer,” he added.

The President of The Tribune Employees Union, Mr B.S. Jandu, said a series of such awareness and check-up camps would be organised so that all the employees could avail the facility.
