Zirakpur area to have sewerage, water supply
Bipin Bhardwaj

Zirakpur, April 19
To streamline all development projects which had slowed down in the past year, the Zirakpur Nagar Panchayat authorities have taken up a new project for setting up sewerage and water supply in the area. This will be done at a cost of Rs 8.5 crore in the next two years.

Owing to paucity of funds, the Punjab Sewerage and Water Supply Board had approached the Housing Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) for a loan on an instalment basis for the project.

As per the terms and conditions, HUDCO had agreed to release the second instalment on a request from the board. Since the development works moved at a snail’s pace, the board authorities were able to get the second instalment this month after a gap of over three years, sources in the civic body said.

Sources revealed that HUDCO had released two loan instalments of Rs 1.45 crore each. While the first instalment was spent on sinking three deep-bore tubewells and some other development works, the second one would be spent on laying of main sewer and main water pipes.

The civic body would have to contribute 20 per cent of the money to be spent on the project while the rest would be shared by HUDCO. The loan would be recovered by HUDCO after four years.

Mr Narinder Sharma, President of the civic body, said the project would be taken up stage wise. In the first stage, the main sewer and water pipes would be laid along the Chandigarh-Ambala highway. The job of laying internal sewers in different colonies and villages would be taken up in the second stage. Finally the sewers laid in these colonies and villages would be linked to the main sewer, he said.

He said three deep-bore tubewells — in Lohgarh, Bartana and Dhakauli villages — had been sunk.

Orders on new DC’s appointment soon
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 19
Orders to appoint Mr Arun Kumar, a 1989-batch Haryana-cadre IAS officer as the new Deputy Commissioner of Chandigarh in place of Mr M. Ramsekhar, who has served here for four years, are expected any day.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs which is the controlling ministry for Chandigarh is to issue the orders.

Senior officials of the MHA made discreet enquiries on Wednesday giving rise to speculation that the appointment orders of Mr Arun Kumar were expected. Till late in the evening, the Chandigarh Administration had asked a person manning the fax machine in the Home Department to stay.

By this evening, no formal orders were received, but sources confirmed that the MHA was about to issue formal orders as the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) had given its nod.

Holidays in Central Government offices had delayed the orders. Now these are expected either tomorrow or on Monday.

The UT Administrator, Lieut-Gen J.F.R. Jacob (retd), had interviewed three IAS officials of the Haryana cadre for the post of Deputy Commissioner in the last week of January. Other than Mr Arun Kumar, Mr Abhilaksh Likhi of the 1991 batch and Mr R.K. Rao of the 1991 batch were also in the race. The MHA had picked Mr Arun Kumar.
