‘Air Hungama’ welcomes new batch

Chandigarh, April 14
Senior students doing GD Fares and Ticketing certificate course from the National Institute of Technical Education welcomed around 30 new students at a Sector 35 hotel here this evening.

“Air Hungama” gave an opportunity to the newcomers to showcase their talent through short plays, music and mono acting and dance. The show started with an introduction round that was followed by two duet dance items performed by Ruchi and Maulik and Amit and Namrata. Muzamil, a student from Kashmir, presented a solo dance item, while another group of students presented a short play, Krishna Sudama Milan, a story based on true friendship.

The main attraction of the show was the Mr and Ms Fresher contest in which all 30 students took part. They were adjudged on the basis of their performance during the introductory, cat walk and question-answer round. A panel of jury comprising faculty members of the institute selected Sylvia from Manipur as Ms Fresher and Satbir from SAS Nagar as Mr Fresher.

Seminar on role of youth in peace

To pay homage to the martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh massacre, Yuvsatta, along with Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti, New Delhi and Panjab University, organised a colloquium on the role of youth in peace building at ICSSR complex, Panjab University here, yesterday.

Participants deliberated upon various issues regarding the promotion and propagation of peace, which included a Gandhian approach to conflict resolution, peace and non-violence in the emerging global scenario and the role of media in preventing conflict.

Among those who spoke on the occasion included Mr Surya Kant Sharma, Advocate-General of Haryana, Prof R.J.Gill, DUI of Panjab University, Justice J.C Verma (retd), president of the All-India Peace and Solidarity Organisation, Chandigarh, Dr Bhagban Prakash, senior programme officer, CYP Asia Centre, Chandigarh, Dr R.C.Sobti and Dean, Foreign Students, Panjab University.

ANTIGUA and Barbuda comprises of three islands of the Lesser Antilles, situated in Eastern Caribbean Sea. St Kittis and Nevis islands lie to its west, while Montserrat and Guadeloupe are located to its south.

Covering 440 square kms, Boggey Peak is its highest point, rising 402 mts above sea level. There are no significant rivers on the islands.

Columbus landed in Antigua in 1493, and the British colonised it in 1632. It attained independence on November 1, 1981 and its present form of government is a constitutional monarchy with British-style parliament. St. John's, the capital, is also its largest and principal city.

The literacy rate in the English-speaking country is stated to be over 90 per cent. Anglican and Roman Catholic are the principal religions.

Antigua and Barbuda's gross domestic income is estimated to be 645 million dollars with the real growth rate being around 3 per cent. The per capita income is approximately 9450 dollars.

With arable land accounting for about 18 per cent of its land area, Antigua and Barbuda's principal agricultural product is cotton. Tourism is the major industry.

Antigua and Barbuda exports clothing, rum and lobsters, while it imports fuel, food and machinery.

A member of the Commonwealth of Nations,, its trading partners include the United Kingdom, Canada, USA, Caribbean Community and Common Market members.

Police remand for 3 murder suspects

Chandigarh, April 14
Three persons arrested by the UT police for the murder of a 17-year-old resident of Sector 38, Randeep Singh, were today remanded in police custody by a local court. Meanwhile, a juvenile arrested in the case has been sent to a juvenile home by the court.

The victim had allegedly been brutally murdered by the four suspects — Ajay Kumar, Rajesh Kumar, Parveen Kumar and a juvenile — along with others while he was coming from the Sector 38 market along with his brother Harish Kamboj and a friend, Harjinder.
