Kapil Modi emerges dressage champion

New Delhi, April 7
Kapil Modi, astride his Russian stallion ‘Domino’, has won the National Dressage Championship for the fourth consecutive time. The Kapil-Domino duo are the only pair in India to have won the championship four times consecutively.

This win is yet another plume on Kapil’s hat as dressage is one of the most demanding equestrian disciplines. The rider and the mount have to perform a series of very complicated and difficult gymnastic movements to accumulate winning points.

The judging in dressage is similar to that of figure skating, with the points awarded on the basis of accuracy, rhythm, technique and the art of movements. Kapil had a rather cakewalk victory as he was in perfect harmony with his mount. Kapil is trained by Dr Elena Petushkova, former World and Olympic champion.

Kapil, astride Domino, has won the FEI Dressage Championship title four times consecutively, to become the only team in Asia to do so. The young Kapil has now set his sights on qualifying for the Olympic Games in Athens, 2004. OSR
