Chandigarh, April 7
“Maat Pita Sanatan Divas”, a unique way of celebrating Parents’ Day, was organised by the Dev Samaj College for Education, Sector 36, here yesterday. The idea behind the function was to provide an opportunity for students to express their heartfelt thanks to their parents.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr R.P. Bajpai, Director Central Scientific Instruments Organisation, who was the chief guest, emphasised upon the role of parents in the upbringing of the children. Talking about the transformation that is taking place in today’s society, he said the relationship between parents and children had degraded as youngsters, in their race towards modernity, were forgetting their duties and responsibility.

The college Principal, Dr Satinder Dhillon, was of the view that prospective teachers had the responsibility to imbibe and transmit good values and traditions in students.

The function included devotional bhajans sung by students.

Reunion of old students

Chandigarh, April 7
It was a nostalgic evening for old boys and girls of Mayo College, Ajmer, as they got together for a reunion at Blue Eyes here yesterday. The reunion was being organised after a gap of three years. About 50 alumni of the college were present along with their spouses.

Mandip Singh Bajwa, secretary of the Old Boys Society, said senior-most alumni present was Rana Upindra Singh from the royal family of Dholpur who had passed out from the college in 1946. Other eminent persons present included Justice K.S. Grewal and Justice Ashutosh Mohanta.

AN oil-rich country, Angola is located on the south west coast of Africa. To its east lies Zambia and to its north are the Democratic Republic of Congo and Congo. To its south lies South Africa.

Covering an area of 1,246,700 square kilometers, Angola has four major rivers flowing through it. These are Cunene, Cuanza, Congo and Cuando. Its highest point, Serra Moco rises 2,610 meters above sea level. Natural resources include diamonds, oil, gold and iron.

With a literacy rate of 43 per cent, the vast majority of the population is christian.

Angola has been in a state of continuous civil war since 1975, when it obtained independence from Portugal. For many years it was a key Cold War arena, with NATO and Soviet Union supporting rival factions in their conflict against each other.

The arable land, totalling about 3 million hectares, is just 2 per cent of its territory. Principal agricultural products include coffee, corn, cotton, sisal, sugar, tobacco and bananas, while major industrial output includes oil, diamonds, tobacco products, textiles, cement, processed food and sugar.

Angola’s major trading partners are France, Japan, Brazil, CIS Republics, Portugal, Cuba and the US. It imports bulk iron, steel, metals, textiles and clothing, while it exports crude oil, coffee, diamonds, refined oil, fish products, iron ore, timber and corn. With Its gross national income is about 4 billion dollars.

DISTRICT COURTS
Recovery suit against Badal adjourned

Chandigarh, April 7
A recovery suit filed against a former Chief Minister of Punjab, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, by the Deputy Director of the Information and Public Relation Department, Punjab, Mr Jagdip Singh Chauhan, was today adjourned by the UT Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr C.L Mohal, for April 17.

In the recovery suit, Mr Chauhan said that in 1998 he was working as the Deputy Director of the Information and Public Relation Department in Chandigarh and alleged that the then Chief Minister of Punjab, Mr Badal, had directed him to work in the election campaign of his son, Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Mr Chauhan alleged that he had spent Rs 1, 50, 458 from his own pocket for the media coverage with the hope that Mr Badal would return it. Mr Chauhan prayed that a decree for the recovery of Rs 82, 032 be passed in his favour with costs and an interest at the rate of 18 per cent per annum.

Application moved

Acting on an application moved by a chartered accountant, Mr N.K Garg, presently lodged in the Model Jail, Burail, in connection with a scam related to income tax returns on the basis of fake TDS certificates, the UT Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr C.L Mohal, today directed the jail authorities to provide him B-Class facility as per the jail manual.

Case adjourned

A civil suit filed against the Chief Minister of Punjab, Capt Amarinder Singh, and others by a propaganda secretary of the SAD, in Ropar, Mr Gurmeet Singh Matharu, was adjourned today by the UT Judicial Magistrate(First Class), Mr S.S Bhardwaj, for April 16.

Mr Matharu filed the suit through his counsel, Mr N.S Minhas, against the Chief Minister, the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president, Mr H.S Hanspal, and Congress MLAs for mandatory injunction directing the defendants to declare their assets since the day they had taken the oath in the Vidhan Sabha.

Mr Matharu said in the suit that the PPCC had contested the Assembly elections in February 2002 and in its election manifesto it had promised the public through newspapers, electronic media and rallies that if the Congress came in power, the Chief Minister, ministers and MLAs would declare their assets the day they took the oath.
