PGI dean issue may be taken up with Sushma

With the legal controversy over the appointment of Dean, PGI, finally being settled by the Supreme Court, hectic lobbying by those eligible for the post has already begun. The institute authorities are busy making preparations for the first visit of the Union Health Minister, Mrs Sushma Swaraj, to preside over the 25th convocation of PGI on March 28.

With the Supreme Court finally dismissing the special leave petition filed by the PGI against setting aside of the appointment of Dean, by The Punjab and Haryana High Court, decks have been cleared for the filling the post, which fell vacant after the removal of Dr O.N. Nagi. It was for the second time that Dr Nagi’s appointment was set aside.

PGI circles said that the matter regarding appointment of a new Dean, could come up for discussion during the visit of the Union Health Minister, Mrs Sushma Swaraj. They also point out that though it has been a tradition that the seniormost doctor is appointed as the Dean. Suitability as per the Institute Act could also be one of the deciding factors.

Top seed Patnaik upset

The top seed in boys under-18 category Karan Patnaik of Chandigarh was upset by unseeded Satvir Singh of Jalandhar in a tough semifinal which lasted over two hours here at the Mount Carmel Total Tennis Academy here today. Satvir came back from one set down to beat the top seed Karan. Karan started the match with a bang as he showed his baseline strength. He broke Satvir in the very first game at 4-1 and went on to win the first set 6-1, but in the second set it was Satvir all the way as he put pressure on Karan to take the lead 5-1. Karan took the next game but lost the following game and set at 6-2. In the third and final set both held their serves till the score of 3-3. Satvir broke Karan and held his serve to take the lead of 5-3, Karan held his service game and could not break the next serve of Satvir and lost the match with the score reading 1-6, 6-2, 6-4, in favour of Satvir.

In the other semifinal second seed Gurmehar Brar of Total Tennis Academy reached the final defeating Harinderjit Singh of Jalandhar in two sets. In the first set second seed Gurmehar Brar was dominating as he took the first set at 6-1. But in the second set Harinder fought well to give some fight to the second seed. At one stage the score was level at 5-5 but Gurmehar showed his class from the baseline as he took the next two games to wrap up the match with the score reading at 6-1, 7-5. Gurmehar Brar will face Satvir Singh of Jalandhar in the final of the boys under-18 category. The final will be played tomorrow at 3 p.m.

In the boys under -12 category top seed Mandeep Gill along with the second seed Abhairaj moved into the finals beating their topping with ease. In the boys under-14 section Sohail Goel of the St Kabir School and a trainee of Total Tennis Academy upset second seed Akshay Chopra of St. John’s High School in the tie-breaker.

Match ends in tie: Some fine bowling resulted in a tie between Little Flower Convent School and Bhavan Vidyalaya, Panchkula, in the first under-14 Panchkula District Schools Cricket Trophy at Cricket Stadium, Panchkula.

After winning the toss, Bhavan Vidyalaya decided to bat first. Because of fine bowling by Kunal (3 wickets for 4 runs) Karan Goyal (2 wickets for 5) and Nikhil (2 for 17), Bhavan Vidyalaya were all out for 55 runs in 15 overs. In reply, Little Flower team also got out for the same score because of brilliant bowling by Krishna (3 for 7) and Mohit (3 for 18).

Athletics meet: An athletics meet for children aged between five and 16 is being organised by the Residents Welfare Association, Phase 3B2, SAS Nagar on March 30 at the ground opposite Hanuman Mandir.

Association president Harbhajan Singh Takkar said 100 m, 200 m and 400 m races, besides spoon, matka and banana races, will be organised, along with a baby show. Musical chair competition will also be held for parents. The president of the SAS Nagar Block Congress Committee, Mr Kuljit Singh Bedi, is likely to be the chief guest.

Sports day: The Punjab and Haryana Employees Union is organising a sports day on March 29. Union president S.S. Bajwa said 100 metres and 200 metres races would be organised for both men and women. Slow cycling, long jump and high jump competitions, besides 400 metres and 800 metres races, along with tug-of-war and badminton, will be held for men.

Chatti race, lemon-with-spoon race, along with the three-legged race, will be held for women.
