Pulwama massacre rocks Assembly
Tribune News Service

Jammu, March 24
There were skirmishes and chaotic scenes in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly today over the massacre of 24 Hindus by terrorists in Nadimarg village of Pulwama district last night. Some Opposition MLAs demanded resignation of the coalition government of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed saying it had “failed” to check such incidents and had “adopted” a soft policy towards the terrorists.

The Opposition members stressed that the Chief Minister, Mufti Sayeed, should review his policies of a soft approach towards the militants and applying a healing touch.

The Mufti described the incident as yet another attempt to derail the process of dialogue that had been initiated to bring back normalcy in the state.

The Assembly was adjourned for 15 minutes soon after the proceedings started in the morning. Mr Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami (CPM), Mr Ali Mohammad Sagar and Mr Ajay Sadhotra (National Conference) had moved the adjournment motions which were accepted by the Speaker, Mr Tara Chand, and a discussion was held on the dastardly incident.

Much heat was generated when there was a skirmish between Mr Jugal Kishore (BJP) and the watch and ward staff whom the Speaker ordered to physically remove him from the House. The clothes of Mr Jugal Kishore got torn in the process. However, according to PTI, angered at the watch and ward staff lifting him out of the House, Mr Jugal Kishore tore his clothes and shouted anti-government slogans in the lobby of the Assembly.

There were arguments between the Speaker and NC members who trooped into the well of the House several times. Some NC members staged a dharna in the well of the House on the issue of Mr Jugal Kishore having been physically removed from the House.

The Opposition members shouted slogans against the government and said the fate of common people could be imagined when an elected MLA was humiliated in the House in the presence of the Speaker and the Chief Minister.

The NC, BSP and JSM members strongly protested against the removal of Mr Jugal Kishore and stalled the proceedings of the House for quite some time.

The atmosphere in the Assembly and outside was surcharged as the Opposition members demanded immediate resignation of the Mufti government. They pointed out that the Mufti was talking of return of the Kashmiri Pandits to the valley, but those who had gathered the courage to stay put there instead of migrating to other places in the country were unsafe and were being massacred by the terrorists.

In his emotion-filled statement on the incident, the Mufti said no effort would be spared to track down the militants involved in the incident and teach them a lesson. He said the Kashmiri Pandits were not being forced to return to the valley. The atmosphere should first be made conducive for their return.
