Reduce area under paddy cultivation: Aulakh
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, March 23
The PAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr K.S. Aulakh, has called upon the farmers to reduce the area under paddy cultivation even if it causes financial loss to them, as it can be compensated by growing pulses, fruits and vegetables and curtailing expenditure on alcohol and other intoxicants.

He was addressing farmers at the concluding function of the two-day kisan mela here today. He urged the farmers to sow paddy nursery around May 10 and transplant it between June 10 to 20. The prevalent practice of sowing of the crop much earlier than the recommended time should be discarded. He said these measurers were necessary to check receding water table.

He said if underground water was not utilised judiciously, it would require an investment of around Rs 2,000 crore to install submersible pumps for drawing water from deeper layers. Last year, 75,000 centrifugal pumps had to be replaced with submersible pumps. He also advised the farmers to complete cotton sowing in the month of April and appealed to the government to ensure timely supply of canal water for the purpose.

Dr J.S. Kolar, Director of Extension Education, shared with the farmers some of the promising recommendations made by the university during the current year. He suggested to refrain from the use of unrecommended insecticides or mixtures of pesticides.

Dr G.S. Nanda, Director of Research, PAU, spoke about the three new varieties released by the university. The university has released paddy PR-118, which is bacterial blight resistant, super basmati, a high yielding basmati, and moong SML-668, which can be cultivated both in summer as well as kharif seasons.

The Vice-Chancellor gave away prizes to the winners of events conducted by the College of Home Science and other competitions.

In farm produce competition, the first prizes went to Kanwaljeet Singh of Bathinda for potato, Pardeep Singh of Sangrur for carrot, Chamkaur Singh of Sangrur for tomato, Dosanjh Agricultural Farm, Nawan Shahr for chappan kadu and peas, Baljinder Singh of Fatehgarh Sahib for cabbage, Sukhdev Singh Bains of Jalandhar for cauliflower and onions, Gurmeet Singh Sohi of Ropar for garlic and Jagtar Singh of Sangrur for chillies.

Knowledge is power and to channelise this power for the best resources and fruitful results, Punjab Kesari, Yugvir, Jain Acharya, Shri Vijay Vallabh, Surishwar Ji Maharaj, founded S.A.N. Jain Senior Secondary School, Daresi Road, Ludhiana, in 1933, to spread fragrance of learning and dispel darkness from the inner recesses of mankind. The school is run by Shri Atma Nand Jain Education Board under the patronage of Shri Atma Nand Jain Sabha (Regd.) Ludhiana, under the dynamic leadership of Mr Jawahar Lal Oswal, a big industrialist of northern India, and rugged administration of Mr Shri Pal Jain (manager) and Mr Sikander Lal Jain (general secretary).

In January 1953, his excellency, Mr Chander Lal Trivedi, Governor of Punjab laid the foundation stone of the new building situated in Daresi ground. The institution got permanent recognition from the Education Department of Punjab in 1967. Higher secondary system of education was introduced and this institution was one of the first which was selected for the same. Two streams — humanities and non-medical — were initially introduced but besides these streams, commerce Faculty was also introduced keeping in view the changing economic scenario of the country and increasing demand of the public.

The school has two full fledged science laboratories for physics and chemistry having sufficient equipment up to +2 classes. The school’s library is unique in many respects. It is matchless in the category of senior secondary schools in the district.

The institution has been making all-out efforts to inculcate discipline among students since the year of its existence in 1933. Inspite of non -availability of a playground, the school has not been lagging behind in displaying its talent in sports. An old student Ashwani was selected for the school boys team touring West Indies. It was first milestone in the history of school cricket. Mr Raj Rattanvir, a student of class IX, participated in the progress by leaps and bounds. This crowning success is the outcome of the sincere efforts of the teachers together with the best-cooperation of the managing committee.

‘Greatest religion is the science of humanity’

Shiv Chander MalhotraFrom a village school teacher to the principal of SAN Jain Senior Secondary School, Daresi Road, Ludhiana, Mr. Shiv Chander Malhotra, has covered a long distance in the field of teaching. Mr Malhotra has found that being a village teacher his experience was that education was a simple affair but in the hub of commercial city, Ludhiana , the attitude of students, their parents differs much from that of rural folk. He was appointed principal of this school in November, 2001. His endeavour as a principal was to bring better discipline and to bring it, a few incorrigible students were expelled too. Next he concentrated on all round development of the students, which he felt was very important.

On Education

“The three aspects of education are bookish knowledge, moral education and education for livelihood. Unfortunately our present education system lays emphasis on ‘bookish knowledge’ only "This kind of education is inadequate so long as it does not equip students to earn their livelihood A better infra-structure to bring in force vocational education is needed. The principals should come on one platform and urge the government to change the pattern of education. Actually we are waiting for the opportune moment for the govt to stretch out their hand towards us, and we feel with the changing scenario due to globalisation, the govt will have to over haul the entire education system and make it more vocational.

On discipline

Discipline must be inculcated among students to prepare them for their future life. Without discipline, a person can never be successful in any walk of life. ‘Catch them young’ is the underlying principle. Hence discipline is taught to young students. We take the help of older pupils to maintain discipline of junior classes. We encourage self-discipline among students . We arrange lectures and in the assembly are always quoting examples. Since the school is located in the walled city, the students are quite simple for they belong to middle class and are not hi-fi. The teachers are asked to assume the place of parents and so even when they punish them, the students know it is for their betterment.

On religion

“ For me the greatest religion is the religion of humanity,” says Mr Malhotra.

Since it is a government aided school, no religion is to be given preference as the government wants every school to have a secular outlook. But surely the syllabus should provide some periods for moral education. Without moral education a student inspite of high qualification, will not become a good human being. Without humane all the degrees are meaning less. One should be a good human being before anything else. We invite saints, organise seminars for moral development of the students.
