India lift boys Asia Cup hockey title

New Delhi, March 12
The Indian boys capped their fine run when they beat Bangladesh 4-1 in the title clash of the second Under-16 Boys’ Asia Cup Hockey Tournament at Dhaka, according to information reaching Delhi. Raghunath scored three goals while Baljinder Singh hit home the other goal.

All the goals came off penalty corners. Pramod Kumar was named the man of the match while V Raja earned the man of the tournament trophy.

India down France

In a league match of the Akhbar El-Yom 5th International Hockey Championship, India downed France 5-3. India take on Poland in their next match.

Manish hits ton for IA

New Delhi, March 12
Manish Sharma blasted a rapidfire 111, embellished with 15 boundaries off 120 balls, to help Indian Airlines defeat Delhi Blues by 52 runs in a league match of the fourth Roshanara Cricket Tournament at the Roshanara ground.

Put into bat, Indian Airlines rode on the brilliant knock of Manish Sharma with Chandan Madan making a useful 36.

Medium-pacer Harish Puri captured three wickets while Mukesh Dewan, Ankur Kakkar and Ashwani Katyal took two wickets each. Gagandeep Singh and Sonu Sharma claimed three wickets each for Indian Airlines. Manish Sharma was adjudged the man of the match.

Scores: Indian Airlines: 256 for 9 in 45 overs (Manish Sharma 101, Chandan Madan 36, Harish Puri 3 for 56, Mukesh Dewan 2 for 62, Ashwani Katyal 2 for 41, Ankur Kakkar 2 for 44).

Jitender’s display goes in vain

A fine all-round performance by Jitender Badola (58 n.o. and 4 for 32) went in vain as Armed Forces Headquarters lost to Delhi Audit by 50 runs in the title clash of the Inter-Ministry Cricket Tournament at the Vinay Marg ground.

Pankaj Joshi played a star role, slamming a magnificent 134, studded with 13 fours and three sixes for Delhi Audit.

Raju Sharma chipped in with a strokeful 84, while K S Rana (3 for 40) and Anil Bhat (3 for 41) claimed the bowling honours. Jitender Badola was adjudged the best bowler while Pankaj Joshi and Raju Sharma were declared the best batsman and best all-rounder respectively. Civil Services Cultural Board secretary Girish Kumar Tudeja and assistant secretary Rakesh Mehta distributed the prizes. 

Scores: Delhi Audit: 304 for 7 in 40 overs (Pankaj Joshi 134, Raju Sharma 84, Sarwan 42, Jitender Badola 4 for 32).

Prashant Lal excels in Commonwealth Cricket

An all-round performance by Prashant Lal (65, 2x6, 7x4) and a strokeful 75 by Arun Pandala enabled British High Commission beat Sri Lankan High Commission by 134 runs in a league match of the second Commonwealth Cricket Tournament at the National Stadium ground. Prashant Lal was named the man of the match.

Scores: British High Commission: 286 for 5 in 35 overs (Arun Pandala 75, Prashant Lal 65, Vikram Yadav 53, Shanka De Silva 4 for 52). Sri Lankan High Commission: 152 in 32.5 (Vikum 28, Dilesh 27, Prashant Lal 4 for 10, Sri 2 for 20).

Subhania drub S B Youth

Subhania Club beat S B Youth by three wickets in a Super A Division match of the DDCA League at Kotla No-I ground.

Scores: S.B Youth: 181 for 9 in 40 overs (Sachin Yadav 41, Sourav Ratan 35, Tejender Singh 3 for 29, Shri Ram 3 for 42). Subhania Club: 185 for 7 in 39.3 overs (Prashant Ahlawat 62, Nitin Chibber 40, Imran Ali 26, Sangram Singh 2 for 28).

Rohtak Road Gymkhana beat Youngsters Club by five wickets in a Super A Division match at the Ramjas Sports Complex ground.

Sant Ram helps HDFC Bank win

An all-round display by Sant Ram helped HDFC Bank defeat JRA by 121 runs in a Super League match of the tenth Teri Cup Cricket Tournament at the Central Secretariat ground.

Scores: HDFC Bank: 218 for 5 in 25 overs (Sant Ram 65, 6x4, 4x6; Girish Sharma 36, 4x4; Vinay Kumar 30, 2x4; Muskan Singh 22, 2x4; Sridhar Khate 3 for 44).

JRA: 97 all out in 22.8 overs (Mohan Chauhan 19, Rajesh Natarajan 18, Sant Ram 4 for 21, Yatin Dalvi 3 for 12). Sant Ram was named the man of the match.

Teri Badminton

Military Sports Council meet

New Delhi, March 12
The Board of Directors’ meeting of the International Military Sports Council will be held in New Delhi from March 13 to 15. The meeting is being held in India for the first time. Representatives from 15 countries will participate. The countries are Italy, Belgium, Canada, South Africa, Germany, Sweden and France. The inaugural ceremony will be held at the Air Force Sports Complex, Palam on Thursday at 9 am. OSR

Delhi courts to be computerised by May

New Delhi, March 12
Delhi courts are finally catching up with the IT revolution with their functioning expected to be fully computerised by May this year. The staff members at the courts are being imparted training under the guidance of computer training major NIIT, which has devised a 16-hour package, comprising eight sittings of two hours each.

The new project is being monitored by the Delhi High Court’s Project Monitoring Committee headed by Justice Madan B Lokur. The orders for the purchase of computers are expected to be made by the end of this month early next month, sources said.

While training at the Karkardooma and the Tis Hazari courts has already begun, Patiala House courts will begin training as soon as it gets enough space. The staff at the Tis Hazari Court have been divided into four groups of 20 each and are being trained in two shifts everyday.

HC judge visits Bhiwani, Dadri courts

Bhiwani, March 12
Members of the Bhiwani Bar Association submitted a memorandum to the visiting Punjab and Haryana High Court Judge and in charge of the Bhiwani sessions division, Mr Justice Verender Singh demanding removal of problems faced by advocates during the judicial process.

Mr Justice Singh redressed the district-level problems on the spot and assured of accepting a few other demands. He planted a sapling on the premises of the judicial complex. In the memorandum, the local advocates demanded appointment of two additional judges for the speedy disposal of cases, transfer of criminal cases instead of civil cases to the Fast Track Court.

Justice Shamim takes over as Lokayukta

Former Minorities Commission Chairman Justice (retd) Mohammed Shamim today took over as the second Lokayukta of Delhi. Justice Shamin succeeds Justice R. N. Aggarwal, who was appointed Delhi’s first Lokayukta in December 1997. The post had been lying vacant since Justice Aggarwal demitted office in November 2002.

Justice Shamim was administered the oath of office by Lieutenant Governor Vijai Kapoor at a ceremony at the Raj Niwas lawns today. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, her cabinet colleagues and legislators, Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Prof. Jagdish Mukhi, Police Commissioner R. S. Gupta, MCD Commissioner Rakesh Mehta and some judges of the Delhi High Court were among those who attended the function.

Born on December 30, 1937, Justice Shamim joined the UP Judicial Service in 1964.
