Haryana, Delhi sail into last four

Chandigarh, March 11
Haryana, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Delhi Audit sailed into the last four of the Inter Zonal IA and AD Football Tournament being played here at the Sector 17 football ground.

Haryana outplayed defending champion Tamil Nadu 3-1, Maharashtra got the better of Andhra Pradesh 5-4 in a tie-breaker. Rajasthan had a narrow win over Orissa 1-0 while Delhi Audit blanked West Bengal 1-0 in the last match of the day.

Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by Mr Virendra Singh, Adviser to the UT Administrator. Mr M.Deena Dayalan, AG (Aand E), Haryana, presided over the inaugural function while Mr Ashwani Attri, AG (Audit), Haryana, also graced the occasion.

TT tournament semis

The Accountant-General (HP) and Delhi Audit will meet in the final of the team championship in the north zone IA and AD Table Tennis tournament (tt) played here at the Sector 23 TT hall. In the semi- finals, AG (HP) beat AG (Haryana) 3-2 while in the second semi- final Delhi Audit defeated AG Allahabad 3-1.

Earlier, Ms Namita Sekhon, IAAS, inaugurated the meet.

Volleyball camp

Balwinder Singh, a student of Shivalik Volleyball Academy, has been selected for the Indian junior men volleyball team coaching camp to be held at SAI, NS South centre, Bangalore, from March 11 to April 19. The Indian team will take part in the Junior 
Men World Volleyball Championship to be held in Iran from August 23 to 30.

Mr D.S.Bedi, Director-Principal of Shivalik Public School, said it was a big honour for their school. Mr Bedi said their volleyball coach from the Sports Authority Of India(SAI), Mohan Nagreta, deserved praise for grooming Balwinder to this level.

Lifters’ rich haul

City weightlifters won a rich haul of medals, including three gold medals, one silver and a bronze medal, in the 55th Men and 18th Women Senior National Weightlifting Championship held at Lucknow from March 5 to March 9. The team was got an overall sixth place of the total 26 teams.

Mr H.S.Bansal, organising secretary of the Chandigarh Amateur Weightlifting Association, said in the 105-kg class Gurpreet Singh created history by winning three gold medals and one silver by lifting 330 kg (snatch 150 kg, clean and jerk 180 kg).

He also bagged one gold medal each in the overall championship, in the inter-state, in snatch and a silver medal in clean and jerk.

In the 94-kg class Baljit Singh won bronze in the clean and jerk by lifting 175 kg.

Bottoms Up Golf at Forest Hill

Chandigarh, March 11
Holi celebrations will start at Forest Hill Golf and Country Club on March 16 with Stroh's Bottoms Up 18-Hole Golf Tournament for golfers of all clubs of Chandigarh to test the skills of the golf addicts.

This will add a new dimension to the inter-club golf tournaments around Chandigarh. The Swig and Swing is open to participants from all over. Many combinations which have registered are father and son, husband and wife, parent and children. The entry fee is less than the green fee, which includes free swigs, a light breakfast and lunch. This is to encourage golf in this environment-friendly golf course situated in the foothills of the Shivaliks.

The FHR also has croquet for the non-golfers. The croquet will be played on the lush lawns of the resort , leading to a complete family day-out. The celebrations will culminate on March 19 with Pammi Bai enthralling the audience. TNS

Shop raided

Chandigarh, March 11
In a late night development, Income Tax officials descended upon a Sector 22 chemist shop "for carrying out a detailed survey".

About 10 to 12 officials, reportedly accompanied by police, reached the shop at about 8 pm to "check the records". Terming it as a route exercise, the officials said the intention was just to verify the stocks. The owner of the shop, when contacted on the telephone, confirmed that the presence of the officials.
