Review of education
policy sought Ludhiana, March 9 Dr Shiv Gupta said the forum had strongly objected to the illegal donations being charged by public schools and even schools affiliated with the Punjab School Board. Many schools even do not issue receipts for the money charged under the table. Similarly admission fees, building fees and other charges must not be charged every year from the old students. Moreover, all fees and funds should be charged as per the rules of the Punjab School Education Board and the Central Board of Secondary
Education. Their rates of admission, tuition and building fees and science funds etc., should be publicised in the newspapers and also displayed on the notice boards of all schools so as to bring transparency. No superfluous books should be prescribed in nursery, pre-nursery and other classes. Similarly, no fixed shops should be prescribed for purchase of books, bags, ties, shoes, he added. Mr Malhotra said district education offices should be computerised and computerised information centres should be
established at all district headquarters to provide complete information to students, teachers and parents. Experience Certificates issued by the board affiliated schools should be accepted for admission to B.Ed. courses. |

HAMARA SCHOOL
Sanatan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School
Sanatan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School is an institution with the mark of excellence. It was established in 1972. The school campus is spread over two acres and it is administered by a distinguished board of trustees. Though due emphasis is given to academic and discipline, the stress is on all-round character building. The school provides opportunities for students to develop a myriad of interests. This school is affiliated to the Punjab School Education Board. With the best teachers available and a very cooperative management, quality is the only word that is honoured. The school provides the students with ample amenities for games, music, dance, art and craft. The school has a double-storeyed building comprising a hall, science laboratory, computer centre and a canteen. The school encourages the students to excel not only in academics, but also in co-curricular activities. The activities make a very positive contribution towards student’s cultural and aesthetic development. Stress is laid on parental care and individual attention. The school also stresses on the growth of the child in building its confidence, based on sound knowledge and general awareness. The approach towards the students is such that they are nurtured with a scientific outlook while retaining traditional, ethical and secular values. The aim of the school is to prepare young children to grow into highly competent citizens, ever committed to serve their family, country and humanity at large. Classroom teaching becomes tiring and monotonous for children. For this the school has plenty of productive activities to give them more relaxation, self-discovery and a sense of fulfilment. The students are trained in music, dance, art and craft, painting, clay
modelling, toy making etc. Educational tours and excursions are also organised to give the right exposure to children. Parent-teacher meetings are organised on the last day of every month so that full report could be given and discussion should be concrete and meaningful. The very foundation of high academic standards is laid at the nursery level through the Playway method of teaching and excellent spadework is done at the primary level. |
If teachers are disciplined, students will follow suit Ms Sadhana worked in the evening edition of National Herald before she turned to teaching as a career. She did B.Ed and M.Ed and was the youngest Principal appointed directly by the management of Sanatan Vidya Mandir. She joined in 1984, when the strength of students was only 250. At present, it is more than 2,000 and the staff strength has risen from 17 to 70. Government schools can run electrical and mechanical courses under vocational guidance courses, but Ms Sadhana, in view of their importance, has started them free of cost for students of classes VIII to XII. The girls learn homescience. On education The need of the hour is to make syllabus relevant to real life. I believe that the education system should be designed in such a way that it can develop students skills, aptitude and their morals. The real aim of education is not just to inform but transform the child. The present system of education has too heavy and tedious curriculum and fails to prepare students to face problems of life. Education should help the students to become self-dependent and earn their livelihood. I have introduced “no bags” for the age group of 3 to 6 because childhood is lost under the burden of these heavy bags. Such is the weight of their bags that their frail body droops and they often complain of getting tired. I want that only three subjects, arithmetic, Hindi and English, should be taught to kids. Children should learn by audio-visual aids i.e. toy computer, slides charts and pictures. It will enhance their learning skills in a natural way. On discipline I am in favour of self-discipline, which means discipline from within and not imposed from outside. Discipline cannot be taught theoretically. A teacher has to act as a model and a pioneer. If teachers are disciplined, then students automatically will be disciplined. I have given my teachers a motto, “God sitting in you is keeping a record of your each and every activity” so they perform their duties with full awareness under the “supervision” of the Almighty and not under me. As all our teachers are not only God-fearing but also God-loving. When the behaviour of any student becomes unacceptable, proper counselling is given to him to realise his mistake, rather than corporal punishment. By love and reasoning, discipline is maintained. On religion My emphasis is on secularism. I want to teach students to respect both science and religion. Students should not only believe in God but they should also know the God by the scientific way. Religion cannot be taught theoretically through books only. Meditation and yoga help to attain spiritual peace. Meditation and with correct breathing techniques. Meditation sharpens the memory of students, increases their concentration, improves their physical health and makes them free from stress, strain and depression.
