68 students get degrees
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 7
Sixty-eight students of the Government College of Arts, Sector 10, were awarded degrees in four different disciplines at the college’s third convocation here today.

Delivering the convocation address, the chief guest, Prof R.B. Bhaskaran, Chairman, National Academy of Art, urged young artists to listen to their ‘inner voice’ for registering their artistic expression.

He said the colleges of art were not serving the desired purpose. These were only imparting education in painting and sculpture, which was irrelevant as these courses were not job-oriented. He said such courses should be clubbed with training in craft which would provide students an avenue for self-employment.

Earlier, in his welcome address, the college Principal, Mr Brahm Prakash, described professor Bhaskaran as a genius, an awakened artist, a good teacher and an efficient administrator.

Lecture held

The NSS unit of the Government College for Girls, Sector 42, organised a lecture on the role of women to mark Women’s Day, here on Friday. Speaking on the occasion, Dr C.L. Narang highlighted some crucial problems being faced by the women in society. Citing the examples of Kiran Bedi, Kalpana Chawla and Amrita Pritam, he said modern women were actively competing with men in all spheres.

DISTRICT COURT
7-yr RI for poisoning lover
Our Correspondent

Chandigarh, March 7
A city youth, Varinder, who had given his lover poison with an intention to kill her, was today sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and sent to the Model Burail jail by a local court.

As per the prosecution, they had an affair for sometime and wanted to get married. But some of the family members of the boy were against their marriage. On January 1998, Varinder called the girl near Neelam Cinema, Sector 17, and told her that they would commit suicide. He persuaded the girl to take half of the poison first saying later he would follow the suit. But after the girl consumed the poison, he refused to do the same and ran away. The girl raised an alarm and was, thereafter, taken to hospital and was saved.

The police had booked the accused after recording the girl’s statement under Sections 328, 307 and 120-B of the IPC on January 24, 1998. Meanwhile, the court acquitted the mother and the sister of the accused in the case as the prosecution failed to prove the allegation levelled against them. On the other hand the boy’s counsel had denied the allegation levelled against him while arguing before the judge and had stated that Varinder had no relationship with the girl and was falsely implicated in the case.

Resident sentenced: A city resident, Ravi Kumar Kakkar, was today sentenced to six months of rigorous imprisonment by the UT Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr C.L Mohal, under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act.

As per the prosecution, the Food Inspector had inspected the Kakkar Karyana store in Attawa village on August 1998. The accused was having in his possession 10 Kg of mustard oil. The Inspector had purchased 600gm as sample. The sample was divided into three parts and one part was sent to the Public Analyst for analysis. As per the analyst’s report the sample was found adulterated.
