Poor patients seek help
Shivani Bhakoo

Ludhiana, March 6
Her world came crashing down when the doctors at the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) told Mohinder Kaur of Moga that her 12-year-old son was suffering from rectal cancer.

Sukhwinder's ordeal started about three months back when he complained of abdominal pain and passed blood in stool. His mother took him to a physician in Moga who gave him some medicines. But as the problem persisted the family decided to take him to the CMCH. Little did they know that their child was suffering from cancer.

Dr V.P.Singh, in charge, Paediatric Surgery Department, recommended immediate surgery. After forwarding all possible concessions, the surgery would involve an expenditure of about Rs 75,000.

Feeling helpless, Mohinder Kaur said they were poor and her husband Nirmal Singh was a blind man. She added that she had three other children. Sukhwinder's elder brother, a labourer, was the only bread-winner in the family and got only Rs 1,200 per month, she added.

Mohinder Kaur further said they had even borrowed some money from their relatives and would be unable to bear the cost of treatment.

The CMCH has appealed to the public to come forward for financial help. Those who wish to help may contact Dr V.P.Singh, in charge Paediatric Surgery, CMCH. Cheques and drafts should be sent in favour of CMCH, Ludhiana, with “for treatment of Sukhwinder” mentioned on the back.

Meanwhile, Daler Singh, a resident near Shahpur road also needs monetary help for the replacement of his two heart valves. The cost of his surgery would be around Rs 1,75,000, according to the CMCH doctors. Though the doctors have given him the operation date on March 15, he has been able to collect only Rs 60,000.

He used to work in a gurdwara but left the job eight years ago because of bad health. "Because of my poor health I started a small sweets shop in the locality and my wife looks after it. We hardly earn Rs 1,500 per month from the shop. Doctors have advised to take medicines on a daily basis, which are very expensive. I have forced my son to drop out of school after class VIII. He now works in a readymade garment shop and earns some money”.

Mr Daler Singh has already visited many places and social organisations for financial assistance but in vain.
