Central Region annex boxing title

New Delhi, March 4
Boxers of Sports Authority of India (SAI) Central Region collected 80 points to annex the title in the SAI Inter-Regional Boxing Tournament held at the Indira Gandhi indoor stadium boxing rink in New Delhi from February 26 to March 1.

SAI’s North Eastern Regional Centre, Imphal, tallied 63 points to take the second position. Junior champion boxers Balbir Singh of STC Delhi and Marry Kom of STC Imphal were also honoured during the prize distribution function, presided over by Lt.Col B.S. Ahluwalia, executive director (academics), Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports, Patiala.

Mr Ahluwalia was impressed with the high standard of the boxers, which, he attributed, to the regular, scientific and systematic training being imparted at various SAI centres. The tournament, in which 159 boxers from six SAI Regional Centres competed, was inaugurated by SAI regional director Shakti Kumar Saggar.

Amit Bhandari, Sandeep Sharma shine

A fierce 4 for 12 haul by medium pacer Amit Bhandari and a strokeful unbeaten 62 by Sandeep Sharma helped Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) defeat Lal Bahadur Shastri Club by nine wickets in a league match of the fourth Roshanara Cricket Tournament at the Roshanara Club ground. Amit Bhandari was named the man of the match.

Former Test player Chetan Chauhan inaugurated the tournament. Roshanara Club Cricket Committee chairman Satish Babbar, vice-president of the club Arun Chopra, secretary Chhatwani, treasurer S.P.Arora and secretary of the Cricket Committee S.S.Tulsi were also present.

Scores: Lal Bahadur Shastri Club: 119 in 28.2 overs (Himanshu Mehta 41, Sumit Dogra 28, Amit Bhandari 4 for 12, Sunil Joshi 2 for 28). ONGC: 121 for one in 13.3 overs (Sandeep Sharma 62 n.o., Radhey Shyam 37).

Wednesday’s fixture: Indian Airlines vs Bright Club.

Youngsters toy with Chand Khanna

A dashing unbeaten half century by Jitender Solanki helped Youngsters beat Chand Khanna Club by seven wickets in a Super A Division match of the DDCA League at the Ramjas Sports Complex ground.

Scores: Chand Khanna: 160 for 6 in 30 overs (Sandeep Rana 54 n.o., Varun Kumar 26, Farman Ahmad 24, Sunit Sharma 2 for 25, Sunil Rawat 2 for 29).

Youngsters: 162 for 3 in 26.1 overs (Jitender Solanki 56 n.o, Rajat Gupta 33, Sunil Rawat 36 n.o).

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) defeated Food Corporation of India (FCI) by 53 runs in a Super A Division match at Kotla No I ground.

Scores: ONGC: 158 all out in 39.4 overs (Sandeep Sharma 41, Ravi Sehgal 41, Yogesh Sachdeva 3 for 33, Aprajeet

Singh 3 for 27). FCI: 104 all out in 35.4 overs (Paras Dogra 47, Rahul Sanghvi 3 for 27, Amit Bhandari 2 for 19, Ravi Sehgal 2 for 24).

Sourabh Nischal deadly

A devastating bowling performance of 6 for 28 by Sourabh Nischal and a smashing 77 by Akash Talwar helped Bharat National Cricket Academy defeat Shahdara Club by 93 runs in an invitation cricket match at the Bharat National ground.

Scores: Bharat National Academy: 280 all out in 40 overs (Akash Talwar 77, Vicky Dhir 54, Sahil Kher 42, Sonu Singh 3 for 76). Shahdara Club: 187 all out in 31.2 overs (Anupam Singh 36, B Chopra 52, Sourabh Nischal 6 for 28, Jitender Kumar 3 for 30).

Gillette record win

Gillette defeated Touchtel by five runs in the Reebok Cricket Tournament. Paljeet Singh was named the man of the match.
