Brijindra to take on DAV College in hockey final

New Delhi, February 19
In an all-Punjab final, Brijindra College of Faridkot will clash against DAV College, Jalandhar in the final of the 10th Nehru Champion Colleges Hockey Tournament at the Shivaji Stadium on Thursday.

In the semi-finals on Wednesday, Brijindra College pushed out St Joseph’s College, Bangalore 6-5 via tie-breaker after the teams were locked 2-2 at the end of regulation play.

DAV College, Jalandhar too had to resort to tie-breaker shootout to subdue Faculty of Social Sciences, Jamia Millia Islamia (Delhi) 5-4 after the teams failed to score any goal during the regulation period.

Brinjindra College went one up in the 10th minute when Kulwinder Singh converted a penalty corner. Twenty minutes later, Adarsh Ganapathy converted a penalty corner to fetch the equaliser for St Joseph’s College.

Thereafter, it became a battle of wits between Kulwinder and Ganapathy as the former regained the lead for Brijindra in the 55th minute of second half, again converting a penalty corner, while the latter converted a penalty corner to pull off the equaliser, yet again, for St Joseph’s.

In the tie-breaker, Pardeep Kumar, Gagair Singh, Navdeep Sharma and Rajinder Singh found the mark for Brijindra while only K. M. Somanna, K. S. Appanna and Varen Chinnappa could hit the target for the Bangalore team.

In the match between DAV and Jamia Millia, Navpreet Singh, Ranjit Singh, Damandeep Singh, Harmanpreet Singh and Gaganpreet Singh were bang on the mark for DAV during the tie-breaker shootout while Prabhakar Singh muffed his shot for Jamia to become the spoilsport.

Deepak Kumar, Jitender Saroha, Manish Kumar Shahi and Ajitesh Roy were the successful marksmen for Delhi.

Thursday’s fixtures: St. Joseph’s College, Bangalore vs Faculty of Social Sciences, Jamia Millia (12 noon); Brijindra College vs DAV College (3 pm)—Shivaji Stadium.

Sunny Sidhu wins Autocross title

New Delhi, February 19
Sunny Sidhu won the champion of champions title in the Maruti Suzuki Autocross held at Noida over two days. Organised by Northern Motorsport, the event was exclusively for Maruti car owners.

It was a skill-driving test wherein drivers negotiated a prescribed course consisting of sharp twists and turns to evaluate their skills in manoeuvring and controlling their cars. The Maruti Suzuki Autocross final was held in Delhi after two regional rounds at Chandigarh and Jaipur.

Autocross aims at providing a common platform to facilitate interaction between experienced professionals and enthusiasts. Vikas Saluja emerged winner in the Maruti 800/Alto 800 category while Sunny Sidhu was the winner in the Maruti Esteem category. Gaurav Gill won the Maruti Baleno 1.6 category with Sunny Sidhu riding his gypsy to triumph.

In the women’s section, Gurmit Kaur won the Maruti 800/Alto 800 category. Sarika Sehrawat emerged winner in the Maruti Zen/Wagon R/Maruti Alto 1.1 category.

Maninder Sharma won the Maruti Esteem event while Sarika Sehrawat raced to glory in her gypsy. One hundred and fifty drivers participated in the races.

L-G’s Cup Golf at Qutab Course

New Delhi, February 19
The third DDA Lt. Governor’s Cup Golf Tournament will be held at the Qutab Golf Course, Lado Sarai, on February 22 and 23. Over 200 golfers are expected to participate in the tournament.

The field will be led by Lt-Governor Vijay Kapoor, and will comprise Marshal of Indian Air Force Arjan Singh, Ashok Pradhan, Ajit K Patnaik, Vijayendra N Kaul, Pradeep Baijal, Admiral Madhvendra Singh, Chief of the Naval Staff, last year’s winner Somesh Goyal and runner-up Jagdish Sharma. The DDA Qutab Golf Course is the first public golf course in the country. DDA started off with just a driving range at the Siri Fort Sports Complex a decade ago. Siri Fort also houses the first Pitch’ N Putt course in the country. The DDA is presently developing a second course at the Bhalswa Lake Complex in North Delhi. OSR

Youngsters, CWC enter semi-finals

Youngsters Club and Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) entered the semi-finals of the third Rajdhani Sports Cricket Tournament.
Youngsters defeated Rajdhani Sports by three wickets at the Palam ground while CWC edged out Indian Airlines through the spin of coin at the Khalsa School ground. The coin had favoured CWC against South Delhi Colts a day earlier.

A dashing knock of 81 by Jitender Gulia and 67 by Deepak Sharma helped Youngsters Club coast to victory. Gulia and Deepak added 156 runs for the second wicket.

Scores: Rajdhani Sports: 212 all out in 40 overs (Manish Chawla 58, Ashish Sharma 40, Damanjeet 39, Savit Chaudhary 3 for 30, Jitender Solanki 3 for 55).

Youngsters: 213 for 7 in 40 overs (Jitender Gulia 81, Deepak Sharma 67, Joginder Singh 3 for 37).

Tarun shines

An all-round performance by Tarun Dogra (69 and 3 for 25) enabled Gyan Bharti South Delhi Cricket Academy defeat hosts United Cricket Academy by 54 runs and entered the final of the first United Cricket Cup Tournament at the Ashok Vihar ground.

Gyan Bharti: 214 for 7 in 40 overs (Tarun Dogra 69, Eklabya Divedi 37, Prateek Pawar 35, Manish Mishra 3 for 24, Kunal Nagpal 2 for 25).

United Delhi Cricket Academy: 160 all out in 39.1 overs (Suhaib Savari 77, Deepak Sharma 21, Tarun Dogra 3 for 25, TCA Jayant 2 for 45).

Touchtel beat Pepsi

Touchtel defeated Pepsi by 60 runs in a league match of the Reebok Cup Cricket Tournament at the Ramjas Sports Complex.

Scores: Touchtel: 197 for 9 in 25 overs (Sanjib Das 28, Vishesh Khanna 28, Vikas Gujral 23, Gautam Garg 2 for 42, Prashant Sinha 2 for 29, Kuldeep 2 for 30).

Royal Sundaram win

Royal Sundaram defeated Tata Tele Services by four wickets in the second Turf Corporate Cricket Challenge at the Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce ground.

Scores: Tata Tele Services: 120 all out in 24 overs (Irayan 20, Hetesh Behl 51, Sangram Rawat 2 for 9, Deepak 2 for 16, Vikas Bansal 3 for 24).

Clintus beat ESPN

Clintus beat ESPN by 50 runs in a limited-over match played at the Harbaksh Singh Stadium. Amrit Bose in FIH committee

New Delhi, February 19
Secretary-general of the Indian Women’s Hockey Federation Amrit Bose has been appointed as a member of the Events/Competitions Committee (ECC) of the Federation Internationale de Hockey (FIH) for a period of four years, till the FIH Congress in 2006. She has been a member of this committee for the last two years. The chairperson of the ECC is Steve Jaspan with Dennis Meredith as secretary.

Sumit cracks 174

Sumit Rana cracked a blistering 174, studded with 25 boundaries and eight sixes, and Parvesh Chikara claimed 4 for 22 as Lal Bahadur Shastri Club defeated CAD Club by 179 runs and entered the quarter-final of the Deepchand Yadav Memorial Cricket Tournament. OSR

Professional Management Group (PMG) defeated Ekta Club by 19 runs in an A-II Division match of the DDCA League at Kotla II ground.

Scores: PMG: 249 all out in 36 overs (Ranjeet Singh 81, Krishan Kumar 34, Jaswinder Singh 4 for 38, Shashi Bhushan 3 for 43). Ekta Club: 230 all out in 35 overs (Gurpreet Singh 54, Jaswinder Singh 54, Kishan Kumar 3 for 45, Ranjeet Singh 2 for 25).

Golden Hawks beat Subhania Club by 28 runs in a Super A Division match at the Yamuna Sports Complex ground.
