How to handle the juicy details

JUST like soft drinks and beverages, fruit juices can leave stains on rugs, linen and hard surfaces that may be difficult to treat if allowed to set. Some fruits like pomegranate and some juices like grape juice can leave tell-tale marks that may be difficult to dislodge. Promptness in mopping up the spills is the key to effective stain removal. Here are steps to tackle those juicy trails.

Juicy spills on rugs

The first thing to do is to blot the spill immediately with a clean white towel.

If the stain has dried then it has to be vacuumed or gently scraped up.

Then proceed to clean the affected area. If necessary use methylated spirit. Else you can clean with a solution of detergent mixed in warm water.

Avoid scrubbing the rug or carpet as this may spoil the texture of the pile. Cover the stain with the towel and press down repeatedly to absorb the stain material and detergent.

When the stain shows signs of having been dislodged, rinse the area with cold water; blot with a dry white towel until all moisture is removed.

Fruit jam on carpet

The method is similar as that for juice stains. Be prompt and remove the stain as soon as you notice it before it gets set.

Blot the jam deposits with a clean rag or towel. Gently rub the area with a soap solution till there is no further transfer of the stain to the towel. Give a final rinse with cold water.

If the spot or stain turns brownish when dry, mix 1 part white vinegar and two parts water. Apply a small amount and blot. Repeat only once.

More juicy details

If there are fruit juice spills on washable fabrics like clothes and linen, you should immediately sponge the affected area with cold salt water or milk.

If the stain still persists, sponge with white vinegar or a hydrogen peroxide solution.

If the stains get dried, try to loosen them by rubbing with a cloth dipped in glycerine solution.

To get rid of juice stains on washable fabrics rinse them in cold water first. then wash with detergent solution. If they are colour fast you can bleach them. But first check for colour-fastness.

To clean white linen, stretch the stained part over a sink and pour boiling water over the marks. Make somebody help you in stretching the fabric.

It’s not tough to handle the juicy details on household fabrics, if you don’t let them get the better of you!
