50-bed hospital opened

Panchkula, February 15
A 50-bed multispeciality B.R.S. City Centre Hospital was inaugurated by Ms Satwanti Ahlawat, Deputy Commissioner, in SCO-41, Sector-11, Panchkula, here today. The former DGP, Punjab, Mr Sube Singh, was the guest of honour.

Giving details, the secretary of the hospital, Mr Anoop Garg, informed that the hospital would have 20 per cent beds reserved for the poor and needy patients free of cost.

The new hospital would provide treatment as well as indoor facility in medicine, surgery, gynaecology and orthopedics and in the expansion programme, Eye and ENT would also be included.

The hospital is equipped with latest equipment in laboratories for haemotology, biochemistry and others. The hospital also has latest gadgets for dental treatment like OPG, RVG, Intra-Oral cameras and implants etc. During its two-day free medical treatment, 150 patients were provided with medicines and 250 dental patients were examined.

Rare honour for Dr B.K. Sharma

Dr B.K. Sharma, a former Director of the PGI, was honoured with the M. Nagano Award at a combined conference of the Indian Chapter of the International Society of Heart Research and International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences held at the PGI recently.

The award is constituted by the International Academy of Cardio-Vascular Sciences after the name of well known Japanese medical scientist Dr M. Nagano. Another well known Indian cardiologist, Dr K.G. Nair from Bombay, was also honoured.

Dr B.K. Sharma has been given this award for his consistent research work and teaching in the field of cardio-vascular, especially hypertension. He has been working in the field of hypertension for the past three decades and has published numerous papers in this field. He has especially done a lot of research on a disease known as ‘‘Takayasu Arteritis,’’ a disease which was thought to be prevelant in Japan but seems to occur in India also with great frequency.

Because of this he has had a long collaborative research with well known Japanese doctor Fujio Numano. He was invited to Japan almost annually during the past one decade. He also had a collaboration with the Institute of Cardio-Vascular Sciences, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada. Incidentally Dr Nagano from Japan and Dr N.S. Dhalla and Dr Pawan Singhal from Winnipeg were also present on the occasion. Readers will be familiar with Dr Sharma’s health write up “keeping fit” in The Tribune, running well over two years.

Rally for cancer awareness

Chandigarh, February 15
The second International Childhood Cancer Day was observed at PGI Department of Paediatrics by members and volunteers of the Sahayta Cancer Sahyog, in collaboration with the International Confederation of Childhood Cancer Parents Organisations.

Students of St Stephen School took out a rally to create cancer awareness among residents. The motto of the rally was “empathise and not sympathise”. The rally was flagged off from the Sector 17 plaza by the Head of Oncology Division in the Department of Pediatrics, Dr I.S. Arya, and was led by UT chief architect Renu Saigal.

The rally was received by the PGI Director, Dr S.K. Sharma, and School Principal Harold Carver after it reached the Advanced Paediatric Centre at PGI. The welcome address was given by the Head of the Paediatrics Department, Dr Narang. A brief introduction to the international childhood cancer day was given by the President of the Sahayta Cancer Sahyog, Ms Neelu Tulli.

Plastic surgeons to hold conference

Chandigarh, February 15
The Department of Plastic Surgery will host the inaugural conference of the North Zone Association of Plastic surgeons on February 16.

At least 80 to 100 delegates from Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, besides Chandigarh, will take part in the conference. Scientific deliberations along with guest lectures, will constitute the programme, covering various subjects of upper and low extremity trauma, correction of craniofacila deformities, facial trauma, nerve injuries and correction of clefts of the life and palate. The conference will be inaugurated by the Director of the PGI, Dr S.K. Sharma, at 10 am.
