PUNJAB

AHMEDGARH
CAMP:
The local branch of Punjab and Sind Bank organised a loan recovery camp on Tuesday. The camp was presided over by Mr H.S. Hoon, Zonal Manager of the bank. According to Mr M.P. Singh, senior manager of the local branch, cases of non-performing advances of around Rs 50 lakhs were settled by mutual understanding between the bank and beneficiaries. Mr Hoon addressed the gathering and gave detailed information about various loan schemes of the bank. Later, the bank team visited various local schools, including Anand Isher Senior Secondary School, Sanatan Vidya Mandir High School and GHG Khalsa Senior Secondary School to educate students about educational loans.

DHADI DARBAR: The Youth and Sports Federation, Punjab, in its meeting in Namdev Gurdwara, Bhadson, on Tuesday decided to hold a ‘dhadi darbar’ in Khalsa High School Nabha on February 23, according to a press note released here on Wednesday. Mr Paramjeet Singh Saholi, president of the federation who chaired the meeting, said four Dhadi Singhs, besides Mahinder Singh, would be honoured. Mr Ravi Inder Singh former speaker would be the special invitee.

AMRITSAR
RESEARCH PROJECT: Dr Saroj Arora, Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences, and Dr Subodh Kumar, Department of Chemistry, GND University, have been sanctioned a major research project, “Antioxident activity of polyphenolic rich antimutagenic fractions isolated from medicinal plants,” worth Rs 5 lakh from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

BATHINDA
GIRL HURT: A girl was injured seriously when her moped was hit by a Matador near the Nai Basti area on the Bathinda-Goniana road on Wednesday. The girl, a student of a local college, was admitted to the Civil Hospital, but was later referred to a hospital in Ludhiana. She has been identified as Jaspreet Kaur, a resident of Faridkot. The Matador belongs to a nursing institute in Muktsar district.

HOSHIARPUR
FINANCIAL AID: Financial assistance of Rs 9.45 lakh has been given to 187 ex-servicemen and widows for the marriages of their daughters in Hoshiarpur district during the past quarter year ending on December 31, 2002. This was disclosed by Mr Kirandeep Singh Bhullar, Deputy Commissioner, Hoshiarpur, while presiding over the quarterly meeting of the District Sainik Board here on Tuesday.

THIKRI PEHRA: The Mukerian police has registered a case under Section 188, IPC, against Dilawar Singh and Amarjit Singh of Fatuwal village for disobeying the order of the Deputy Commissioner, Hoshiarpur, regarding the thikri pehra in the village. Mr Banarsi Dass, Sarpanch of the village, had put both persons on thikri pehra, but they were found absent by the police.

KHANNA
TEACHERS’ UNION
: The Director Public Instructions, Punjab, had assured leaders of the Punjab Pardesh Teachers Union that their demands would be accepted, said Mr Ajit Singh Khanna, press secretary of the union. The DPI had promised this in a meeting with the union representatives and officials of the Education Department, he said. Union leaders Mr Devinder Pal Sharma, president, Mr Ram Sarup Dhaipai, Mr Pritpal Singh Bhandari, Mr Jagtar Singh Virk and Mr Balwinder Verma had attended the meeting.

LUDHIANA
FAREWELL:
Class VII students of Government Middle School, Bodhe, organised a farewell party for the outgoing class VIII students on Wednesday. Rupinder Kaur performed bhangra on ‘Rangla Punjab’. Baljit Singh sang ‘Ankhi kade na darde’. Mr Pushpinder Kumar, art and crafts teacher, conducted the stage. Mr Suresh Kumar, in charge of the school, wished the students good luck and advised them to work hard for board examination.

INAUGURATED: Pumpkins Kindergarten, a playway school, was inaugurated on Wednesday on the Malhar Road. Ms Belie Kler, Principal, said the school would aim to stimulate early brain development with a focus on creativity. She said the school would be a perfect educational institution for tiny tots.

MANDI GOBINDGARH
SEMINAR:
The Desh Bhagat Institute of Management and Computer Science organised a one-day seminar on ‘Big trend-skills’ here on Tuesday. The discussion was based on emerging marketing trends in various industries. Mr P.K. Mahajan, general manager, Avon Cycle Private Industries, Ludhiana, stressed the need of better communication skills. Mr Shalini Gupta, Director DBIMCS, stressed the need of practical experience. Students of MBA-1 and II, MCA-1 and II and BMIT-III participated in the discussion. Shivani Kaura, a student of MBA-II, was the anchor of the show.

AKHAND PATH: The bhog of Akhand Path being held for the speedy recovery of Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra, Member of Rajya Sabha and president of the Sarb Hind Shiromani Akali Dal, will be performed in Fatehgarh Sahib Gurdwara on Friday. Mr Kirpal Singh Libra, former MLA and a senior Akali leader, said in a press note here on Wednesday that Mr Tohra would come from Delhi and participate in the ‘bhog’ ceremony and thereafter, he would return to Delhi. He said Mr Tohra underwent a bypass surgery at Batra Hospital, New Delhi on December 18. He was relieved on December, 31 but has been advised rest till march 31.

MANSA
REVISED ESTIMATE: The railway authorities have sent a revised estimate for the construction of a railway under-bridge to the Deputy Commissioner, Mansa. In the previous estimate the approximate cost of the bridge was Rs 2.60 crore whereas as per the revised estimate, it has been reduced to Rs 1.17 crore.

PATHANKOT
DHARNA: The Central Co-ordination Committee of DoT Officers Association held a demonstration here on Tuesday in support of their demands. Mr Kuldip Raj, district general secretary of the association, gave a charter of demands, including absorption of group B and A officers and the immediate release of the IDA pay scale, to the General Manager, Pathankot district circle.

PATIALA
V-C 'IGNORANT': The Forum for Educational Action and Reform (FEAR) on Monday expressed surprise at the failure of the Punjabi University Vice-Chancellor, Mr S.S. Boparai, to accept and appreciate the “special character” of the varsity. In a statement, the forum president, Dr Amarjit Singh Dhillon, said the Vice-Chancellor either appeared to be ignorant or seemed to be disregarding the university’s website that clearly stipulated the primary duty of the varsity towards Punjabi language.

TARN TARAN
ROAD MISHAP: Baljinder Singh, a resident of Sarwarpur village falling under Kahnuwan police station, was killed on the spot and Daljinder Pal Singh sitting on the pillion of his motor cycle was injured seriously in a road accident near Dalake village on Monday. A case has been registered.

RIFLES RECOVERED: The Harike police has recovered two double-barrelled guns from two residents of Dhattal village and registered cases under the Arms Act against them. Police sources said the suspects were identified as Dula Singh and Heera Singh. The police has recovered the rifles and cases under Sections 25, 29, 54, 59 have been registered against the suspects.

HOSTEL FUNCTION: The Punjab Engineering College Teachers Service Association (PECTSA) has taken a serious view of the college authorities celebrating the annual day of Himgiri Girls Hostel at a time when Kalpana Chawla’s untimely demise is being mourned at the national as well as international level. While condemning this act on the part of the college authorities, a statement issued here today said the members of PECTSA are not associated with such celebrations by the college authorities. The function organised at the hostel yesterday evening had raised many an eyebrow.

AMBALA
ANNUAL DAY: School students delivered a scintillating performance at the silver jubilee annual day function of Bell Toll Public High School on Wednesday. The function was inaugurated by Mr Xavier Pinto, Deputy Secretary of ICSE. Students presented Haryanvi dance, bhangra, giddha and Himachali dance. Former students of the school were also present. Mr Pinto, while lauding the efforts of the students said, the school would celebrate its golden jubilee with even greater enthusiasm.

FATEHABAD
BIRTH ANNIVERSARY: The Ravi Das Mahasabha, Fatehabad, will organise a function on the 626th birth anniversary of Guru Ravi Das on February 15. Mr Jagdish Salora, president of the sabha, said the INLD MP, Dr Sushil Indora, will be the chief guest on the occasion.

IRREGULARITIES FOUND: The Food and Supplies Department checked 11 ration depots in the district during the previous month. Irregularities were found in all 11 depots. According to Mr I.D. Khan, District Foods and Supplies Controller, the licence of one depot has been cancelled, supplies to another have been suspended while show-cause notices have been issued to nine depot holders due to the irregularities found in them.

COUNTERFEIT CDs: The police on Tuesday recovered 496 counterfeit compact discs (CDs) of various leading companies from a local dealer and arrested him under Section 420, IPC. The accused, Punit Kumar, Manager of the firm Ahuja Music Center, was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr R.N. Bharti, who remanded him to a day’s judicial custody.

HISAR
ACCIDENT: An eight-year-old girl was killed in a road accident at Subhash Nagar here on Tuesday. According to the police, Shalu was returning from school in the evening when an oil tanker rolled over her. She died on the spot. The Civil Lines police has arrested the tanker driver, Mange Ram, after registering a case of negligence driving against him.
