Paper-reading contest

SAS Nagar, February 7
The first ‘Jaspal Sethi Memorial Paper-Reading Contest’ was organised by the local Rotary Club at Shivalik Public School here today.

Fortytwo students from 14 schools took part in the contest, which was held in three languages — English, Hindi and Punjabi. Students read papers on one of the five topics provided to them.

Mr Manpreet Singh, president of the local unit of the Rotary Club, said the paper-reading contest was going to be an annual feature. The event had been organised in memory of Mr Jaspal Singh Sethi, who remained president of the local unit of the Rotary Club twice and also the president of the Mohali Industries Association twice. Ms Devinder Kaur, wife of Jaspal Sethi, was the chief guest.

The overall trophy of the contest went to Shivalik Public School. Following are the names of the winners in the three categories: English: Suchreet Kaur, Shivalik Public School, Chandigarh — Ist; Schleen Kaur, Gian Jyoti Public School, SAS Nagar — IInd and Paljeev Kaur, AKSIPS, Chandigarh — IIIrd.

Hindi: Puneet Singh, Shivalik Public School, SAS Nagar — Ist; Disha, Shivalik Public School, Chandigarh — IInd and Neharika, St Xavier’s School, SAS Nagar — IIIrd. Punjabi: Sumit Kaur, Shivalik Public School, SAS Nagar — Ist; and Amandeep Kaur and Daljit Kaur, Sant Isher Singh Public School, SAS Nagar — IInd and IIIrd, respectively.

City teacher wins contest

Chandigarh, February 7
Dr Arun Kumar Sharma, a Lecturer at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 16 has been awarded the first prize in a national essay-writing competition on “The Need and the Outline of a Curriculum on Oil Conservation in Schools”.

The competition was organised by the Petroleum Conservation Research Association under the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Dr Sharma has been awarded a cash prize of Rs10,000 and a certificate at an OCF function held at the Nehru Memorial Auditorium in New Delhi.

Dr Sharma has been working with the UT Education Department for over 15 years. He has contributed over 40 research papers and articles on education, history and allied subjects.

HIGH COURT
Notice of motion

TAKING up a petition filed by 43 doctors having degrees from “recognised institutes in the erstwhile USSR” seeking the initiation of contempt of court proceedings against Secretary of, the Medical Council of India, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued notice of motion for April 29.

In their petition, Dr Sanjeev Mittal and others had earlier contended that the High Court had ruled that internship had been completed by the petitioners and they were entitled to permanent registration. The Court had further directed the MCI to decide the petitioners’ case upon the production of a form regarding the completion of practical training. Counsel added that despite the lapse of over two months, the respondent neither considered, nor granted permanent registration to the petitioners.

Rape victim seeks security

Chandigarh, February 7
The victim in the Shimla girl rape case today moved a plea in a local court for making arrangements for her safety tomorrow when she appears before the Magistrate to record her statement in a complaint filed by her.

She said she apprehended that she would be abducted. Keeping in view the threat, she also stated that she would be escorted by her private security guards.

The two accused in the case — Ram Lal and Narvir Singh — have already been granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. On February 3, the high court had issued notice of motion on a petition filed by N.K. Jain who is currently confined in Burail’s Model Jail. The hearing in the case has been adjourned for arguments on February 11.

Murder suspects in police remand

Panchkula, February 7
The four accused in the murder of taxi driver Deepak Singh were today presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate and sent to police remand till February 15.

The accused Mintu, Vikram Singh, Malkiat Singh, Rajbir Singh — were arrested by a police team led by Sub-Inspector Surjit Singh of the CIA staff in Ambala yesterday. The accused claims the police, are notorious car thieves who shot dead Deepak near Saharanpur. TNS
