‘Talks to resolve Kashmir issue soon’ Srinagar, February 3 Addressing the first meeting of the Srinagar Citizens Council here last evening, Mr Sayeed said tackling the Kashmir situation was a big challenge that had to be met through collective efforts of the government and the people. However, it would take some time to pursue all these matters, he said. The Chief Minister said all pledges made by his government in the Common Minimum Programme would be fulfilled. Efforts are being made by his government to revive tourism in the state, the Chief Minister said. Mr Sayeed promised best-possible medical treatment to detained Hurriyet Conference senior leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani. The council alleged that the authorities in the Ranchi jail were not providing proper treatment to Mr Geelani despite recommendations by doctors that he should be shifted to AIIMS, Delhi. Shortage of power being faced by the state will ease as the Northern Grid has restored the supply it had suspended in view of the extreme winter conditions in parts of the country, Chief Minister said. He said a theme park was proposed to be set up at Badamwari and a park at Chhatabal. He said the government was planning to launch a literacy programme and implement handicrafts promotion scheme to provide employment to the unemployed youth in cities.

Firing by Pak troops in
Jammu division Jammu, February 3 Pakistani Rangers, using light and medium machine guns, targeted areas near border outposts of Nikowal, H.S. Way, Khurd, Karotna in the R.S. Pura sector and adjoining Arnia sector since last evening, they said, adding there was no loss of life or damage on the Indian side. Troops from across the IB have been resorting to firing, usually from dusk to dawn, to disrupt the fencing work undertaken to check infiltration. The BSF, has undertaken fencing along 187.5 km long IB from Paharpur to Akhnoor in the Jammu division, and will be completing 87 km of fencing by June-end this year, the sources said. As Pakistani agencies have been facilitating infiltration of armed insurgents through vulnerable areas along the IB for out terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir, the government had decided to fence the IB along Jammu division on that of the pattern in Punjab, the sources said. Initially, the fencing was undertaken by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) but later it was taken over by the BSF despite heavy firing from across the border. The fencing along the remaining portion of IB is expected to be completed in the next two years, the sources said.
