PDP govt frees 10 prisoners Jammu, January 28 The sentence of the 10 prisoners at Jammu Central Jail was remitted by Governor G.C. Saxena on the recommendation of the state government, an official spokesman said yesterday. “It is customary to release convicts who have undergone a minimum of 10 years’ imprisonment and demonstrated good conduct,” he said, adding that “unfortunately, no such case was considered by the government in the past four years.” “None of the released convicts were involved in militancy-related activities”, the spokesman said. Thanking the Mufti government for his release, 77-year-old Lal Hussain, who was undergoing life sentence for a murder, said he was grateful to the Chief Minister for extending the healing touch to convicts and was confident of beginning a new life. Mohammad Riaz Khan and Billo Devi, both sentenced to life imprisonment, were among the others released.

JKLF to lay claim to Hurriyat office Srinagar, January 28 “We will soon put our case before the Hurriyat Conference for a place in the executive council and we hope the amalgam will take a good decision in this regard,” Baramula district organiser of the JKLF (Gandaroo) Mubashirul Islam told reporters after the district office bearers joined the splinter group. Mr Gandroo was released after several years of detention last November and set up a splinter group claiming ideological differences with the main group under the leadership of Malik. The entire unit of the JKLF from Baramula district pledged its support to the splinter group. Islam said they had decided to strengthen the hands of Gandaroo after a meeting last week. Islam claimed that there was discontent against Malik’s leadership in neighbouring Kupwara unit of the organisation.

Five killed, 64 injured in road accidents Jammu, January 28 The first accident took place when a bus, on its way from Jammu to Udhampur, skidded off the road and rolled down about 100 feet in a river near Kali Mata Mandir on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway last night, killing four persons and injuring 36, three of them seriously, the sources said. In another accident, one passenger bus on its way from Rajouri to Jammu rolled down the road and fell into 200 feet deep gorge at Tatapani on the Jammu-Poonch highway this afternoon, resulting in the death of one woman and injuries to 28 others. All injured have been admitted to a hospital at Rajouri.

Villager injured in Pakistani firing Jammu, January 28 A villager was injured in the Pakistani firing in R.S. Pura sector, they said adding the troops targeted fencing work along the border and fired on 23 border out-posts and hamlets in R.S. Pura, Samba, Hiranagar and Ramgarh sub-sectors of the Jammu-Kathua sector. Along the LoC in Rajouri-Poonch, Pakistani troops shelled mortar bombs on Defence installations and civilian areas, they said. Nearly 130-200 mortar shells were fired in Bhawani, Noushera, Jangarh, Laam, Salotri, Digwar, Krishnagati, Balakote, Bhimber Gali and Kerni area, the sources said and added there was no loss of life or damage to the property. Indian troops also retaliated and exchange of firing and shelling continued intermittently till this afternoon, the sources said.

Cong leader’s house attacked in Kashmir Srinagar, January 28 The militants fired at the house of Mr Banday, who had unsuccessfully contested the recent assembly elections from the Shopian constituency. The guards posted there returned fire and the exchange continued for some time. No one was, however, injured, they said. Mr Banday’s brother, Mohammad Nasir Banday, was killed recently by unidentified militants at Sheeran-Shopian.

21 bank lockers looted in Srinagar Srinagar, January 28 Though the exact value of the property looted from the lockers was not immediately available, a rough estimate says the loss would be in crores. A bank customer identified as Shaheena, whose locker was ransacked, claimed she had jewellery worth Rs 40 lakh in the bank. Rahila, another locker holder, said she had lost Rs 1 lakh worth deposit. Another customer, who wished to remain anonymous, said he had deposits worth over Rs 50 lakh in his locker that was robbed. |
Girl dies in house collapse Jammu, January 28 The mudhouse collapsed in the Sunderbani area. The girl, who was inside the house, was buried under the debris. The other members of the family were sitting outside and received minor injuries.
