Gurmeet stars for R R Gym

New Delhi, January 22
Skipper Gurmeet Singh played a fine all-round role (3 for 22 and 50) to help Rohtak Road Gymkhana defeat Super Star Club by six wickets and entered the final of the seventh Sahibzada Ajit Singh Cricket Tournament at the Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce ground, Pitampura.

Rohtak Road Gymkhana will take on Malviya Club in the final on January 24. Gurmeet Singh was named the Man of the Match.

Scores: Super Star Club: 113 all out in 37.1 overs (Amar Singh 40, Durga Prasad 21 n o, 2x4, Gurmeet Singh 3 for 22, Sandeep Angurala 3 for 19). Rohtak Road Gymkhana: 114 for 4 in 26.1 overs (Gurmeet Singh 50, 8x4; Chetan Sharma 38, 6x4; Narender 2 for 32).

Vijay Dahiya to lead

Vijay Dahiya will lead Delhi in the Ranji Trophy cricket match against Bengal, to be played at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground, from January 25 to 28.

Other members of the team are: Akash Chopra, Gautam Gambhir, Mithun Manhas, Pradeep Chawla, Siddharth Verma, Amit Bhandari, Saradeep Singh, Varun Kumar, Sohail Rauf, Rahul Sanghvi, Arun Singh, N S Negi, Sonu Vaid and Sanjay Gill.

Northern Rly crush Railway Board

Northern Railway recorded a crushing 9-0 victory against Railway Board in the PNB All-India Railway Hockey Tournament at the Shivaji Stadium on Wednesday.

Brajnav Singh, who opened the account, scored three goals while Sandeep, Kuljit Singh (3) and Bikramjit Singh scored the other goals. In other matches, South Central Railway defeated CLW 5-2 while Central Railway defeated RSC 5-0.

Cricket rating awards

New Delhi, January 22
The seventh Annual CEAT International Cricket Rating Awards will be held in Mumbai on January 28. The CEAT awards, based on a rating system conceptualised by legendary cricketers Ian Chappell, Clive Lloyd and Sunil Gavaskar, are the first such awards in cricket.

The awards, established in 1995, comprise trophies and Rs two million in prize money.

The awards for the year 2001-2002 will recognise achievements in five categories—cricketer of the year, team of the year, batsman of the year, bowler of the year and fielder of the year. And special awards will be presented to the “best match-winning performance, lifetime achievement and cricketer of the century.”

And the unsung heroes of “cricket community” will be recognised through two awards—best coach and best sports media personality..

A special jury panel, comprising Ajit Wadekar and Sanjay Manjrekar, will select the winners of the special awards. During the function, the Indian team for the World Cup to be held in South Africa, will be given a warm send off.

Team TVS Racing retain position

New Delhi, January 22
Team TVS Racing retained their national championship position at the MRF National Motocross Championship 2002 for the third time in a row. C Vijayakumar of Team TVS Racing dominated the final leg and was declared the Best Indian racer.

The eventful day kicked off with round one of Indian Experts—Foreign Open class up to 250cc category where Vijaykumar emerged a clear winner. He later won the round two as well, and took his final tally to 197 points in this category. He also emerged winner in Class 2 Indian Experts 80cc, 150cc and second in Class 3—Indian Experts four-stroke class above 110 up to 250cc.c.

Vijaykumar will now leave for Dubai to represent India at the first round of the prestigious 2003 Asian Motocross Championship, which will be held from January 21 to 24. He is the only representative chosen by the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India to represent India.

Judo Federation to hold trials

New Delhi, January 22
The Judo Federation of India (JFI) will hold open selection trials on January 25 at 10 am at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium. The selected judokas will attend a national coaching camp in preparation of forthcoming international events.

The selection trials will be held in the following weight categories.

Men: 60kg, 66kg, 73kg, 81kg, 90kg, 100kg and above 100kg (open).

Women: 48kg, 52kg, 57kg, 63kg, 70kg, 78kg and above 78kg (open).

The judokas can attend the selection trials through their State or department units, which are affiliated to the JFI. The selected players will be put through a training programme under the guidance of qualified coaches.

Mt Carmel beat Modern

New Delhi, January 22
Mt Carmel School beat Modern School, Vasant Vihar, 3-1 in a Group B match of the ESPN Inter-School Soccer League at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Samuel scored two goals and Timothy one for the winners while Abhinav Grover slotted home the consolation goal for Modern School.

In another Group B match, St. Columba’s defeated Sardar Patel Vidyalaya 5-0. Cedric (2), S Dutta, Robinson and Lijo were the goal-scorers.

In Group D, Air Froce School defeated Springdales, Dhaula Kuan 4-0 while G D Goenka downed Birla Vidya Niketan 3-0. Prashant, Michael, Krishna and Rakesh scored the goals for Air Force School. OSR

NDMC to provide better civic amenities

Revision of tariff in respect of property tax, grant of rebate in late payment surcharge, mechanisation of removal of garbage and solid waste, launching of cleanliness awareness campaigns, development of area around state emporia buildings, Baba Kharak Singh Marg, augmentation of sewerage and maintenance of electric sub-stations are some of the major decisions taken in the monthly meeting of the New Delhi Municipal Council, held here yesterday.

Giving details of the decisions of the council, Mr Ram Bhaj, MLA and Vice-Chairman, NDMC said that the civic body had decided to consider the introduction of a new slab of 25 per cent, between the existing slab of 20 per cent and 30 per cent, which will be with rateable value between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh.

The existing slab of 30 per cent will be continued on the properties with rateable value above Rs 10 lakh.

The civic body has also acceded to the request of aided schools and colleges for grant of 50 per cent rebate if there are no arrears.

The council has decided to mechanise its sanitation scheme for removal of garbage and solid waste as per guidelines of various court judgements. It has decided to procure 7 garbage compactors with 14 cubic metre capacity, 1 industrial mechanical road sweeper and 550 garbage bins compatible with compactors of 1,100 litters capacity. A sum Rs 5.40 crore has been sanctioned for these purpose.

The civic body has decided to develop the area around state emporia buildings at Baba Kharak Singh Marg and an amount of Rs 98.11 lakh will be spent for this purpose.

Mr Ram Bhaj further said that the rebate introduced in late payment surcharge for recovery of its electricity/water dues by the civic body has revealed fruitful results. The civic body has recovered Rs 318.30 lakh from the consumers on this account.

The time limit for depositing the dues was December 31, 2002. Now, with a view to recover maximum amount of arrears from the consumers who intend to settle their dues after availing 50 per cent rebate, the council has decided to reopen the scheme for all categories of consumers, fixing last dates for filing the application to February 20, 2003 and March 20, 2003 for depositing the remaining dues.

Similarly, the civic body has sanctioned an amount of Rs 56.7 lakh for the annual maintenance of 66 KV, 33 KV and 11 KV incoming feeders, feeding electricity supply to NDMC area. It covers the cost of replacement of cable, transition joints, end-termination joints and for digging and making joints.

For augmentation of sewerage at 3rd and 6th cross road, Sarojini Nagar, Rs 10.58 lakh have been sanctioned.

A sum of Rs 57.26 lakh has been sanctioned for strengthening and resurfacing of important roads such as Tughlaq Road and Kamraj Marg, which have developed cracks.

Death of cattle: Two suspended

Taking cognisance of the reports published in a section of the Press regarding the death of over 70 milch cattle in nearby Mungan village during the past ten days due to a mysterious disease, Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala has ordered suspension of a Veterinary Surgeon and a Veterinary Livestock Development Assistant (VLDA) with immediate effect as they “failed to discharge their duties with prudence”. Following the orders, Deputy Commissioner Ashok Yadav placed the duo under suspension today.

The DC had visited Mungan village on Tuesday to ensure proper arrangements for health check-ups, procuring blood samples of affected animals and making available required veterinary medicines.

During investigation, the DC observed that Dr Raj Singh Dangi, Veterinary Surgeon, Haryana Cattle Breeding Centre, Kansala and Sri Aflatoon, VLDA at Mungan village, failed to discharge their duties properly. He claimed all the 1,457 milch cattle in Mungan village had been vaccinated. He said the veterinary doctors of Hisar had taken the blood samples of the affected cattle and the reports were expected in two days. Besides, the DC said the milch cattle in the adjoining eight villages would also be vaccinated by Thursday evening. Commenting on the type of disease, he said it appeared to be a mixed type of infection.

CM lays stone

New Delhi, January 22
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday laid the foundation stone of a bridge on the Jaitpur Road near Badarpur. The bridge will be built over the irrigation canal in Mithapur.

The Department of Public Works of the Haryana Government will construct the bridge for which the Government of NCT of Delhi has released the funds.

The bridge will have a 7.5-metre-wide carriageway. It will cost an estimated Rs 1.15 crore. The construction of bridge is expected to be completed in one year’s time.

On the occasion, the Chief Minister said the Government of NCT of Delhi was all for development of the city, according to the demand and need of citizens. Funds, she said, would not be a handicap. TNS
