“If old people of the house decide to give up the use of drugs and confess it before the members of the family, the young too shall start thinking on the same lines and society will be finally able to look forward to an improved special set-up.”
These words were expressed by Mr G.S. Mangat, former Director-General of Police, in a seminar on drug addiction and female foeticide by the Baba Deep Singh , Healthcare and Welfare Society at Punjab Public School, Rupalon, today.
The function was presided over by Mr D R Bhatti, ADGP, and the guest of honour was Dr P.S. Jassi, consultant, Unicef.
Mr Bhatti asked the people to follow the path shown by the Gurus by leaving the addiction to drugs. Dr Jassi spoke elaborately on the declining sex ratio in Punjab and how the future generations would have to face the wrath of inhuman deeds performed by their predecessors.
Mr Gurcharanjit Singh, general secretary of the apex body of the NGOs, presented a report on the work done by their organisation as regards anti-drug addiction and anti-foeticide drives launched by them. He said, “A total of 44 crore bottles of liquor are used in Punjab every year, which was more than any other state.
Dr Rajpal Singh Mangat criticised in strong words the chemist shops being opened in front of educational institutions.
The others who expressed their views on the occasion included Principal Gurminder Kaur, Principal Kamaljit Kaur, Mr Davinder Singh, Prof Prithipal Singh Sohi, Ms. Harmanjot Kaur Mangat, Ms Sarbjit Kaur, Mr U.C. Pande and Mr Tejinder Singh.
On this occasion, help was provided to 10 aged people by HelpAge India. Eight needy women were given blankets and 82 children were given free notebooks.
A free medical camp was organised in which of 327 patients were examined and provided medicines by the Eye Bank,
Mansooran.
