Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, January 20
A four-day long stoma and wound care workshop, organised in Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), ended yesterday. The workshop was organised as a part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the CMCH. A team of specialised consultants and professionals from Delhi, CMCH and South Africa gave hands-on training in stoma care.

Senior surgeons of the CMCH addressed resident doctors and the nursing staff on various topics of ostomy surgeries and wound care. Dr Navneet Choudhry, Head of the Department of General Surgery, explained how ostomy was performed in various diseases the correction of anatomical birth defects.

Stoma was an artificial, temporary or permanent opening, created on the abdominal wall and has its own set of problems for patients who have to wear a pouch over it for the collection of fecal material, he said. Though after the ostomy a person can lead a normal life, but at time has to face social and other problems. Adopting to new anatomical changes is very difficult without proper guidance and complete knowledge,” said Dr Choudhry.

Emphasising on the need of post-ostomy care, Dr Rajeev Kapoor, surgeon and coordinator of the stoma clinic, said organisation of such workshop was essential as very less was known about stoma. “Since even medical professionals lack the knowledge of post-surgery stoma and wound care, in most cases the patient are left on their own, adding to their suffering,” he said.

Keeping this in view, a devoted stoma clinic was established in the CMCH. The clinic is only one of its kind and caters to the need of the entire north India. He said the solo motto of the workshop was to provide training to nurses from the far off regions like Jammu and Kashmir, so that patients hailing from these areas do not have to travel far for stoma care.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr T.M. Jaison, acting Director, CMCH, said such workshops should be conducted by the hospital regularly and more medical professionals and nursing staff be trained in stoma care.

Dr Navneet Choudhry, Professor and Head, Department of General Surgery, CMCH, Dr Sunil Singh, Professor, General Surgery, Dr Rajev Kapur, Professor and Head, Surgery, CMCH, Mr Tony Rishbieter from South Africa and Mr S.K.
