Samridhi Mahajan enters last four

Chandigarh, January 12
Samridhi Mahajan, a student of Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, drubbed past Aastha to make her way into the last four of the girls under-16 event on the opening day of the 14th Chandigarh State Badminton Championship played here today at Sector 42 indoor hall.

In the girls under-19 section, Harleen and Kanika defeated their respective opponents, Seema and Tanvir, with ease. As many as 100 players in different age groups are vying for top honours in various events. Earlier in the morning, Vikas Kundu and Pawan had to stretch hard to defeat their respective rivals Narinder and Mandeep, in the boys under-19 section. Akash Sethi was another player who got the better of Paras in straight games to enter the next round. Gurjeet also moved up in the event.

In the boys under-16 section, winners included, Vivek, Gurkirandeep, Manish Bansal, Amit Kalia, Vineet, Chetan, Aman, Vikas, Ankur and Neeraj. In below-13 section included, Tushar, Abhishek, Vivek Saroya, Akshaya and Oscar Bansal, moved into the next round.

Body-building meet

Bon Sante won the overall body-building championship in the 14th Mr Chandigarh Body Building championship held this evening in the DAV College Auditorium, Sector 10. Hari Narain, however, was adjudged ‘Mr Chandigarh’, while Jaswinder was declared second and Raj Kumar got at third place.

Taekwon-do championship

Balwinder Singh bagged gold medal in the sub-junior section, in below-14 age group in LIG (27-29 wt) section of the 12th Chandigarh State Taekwon-do championship played here at the skating-rink, Sector 10. Satya Prakash won gold medal in FEA (25-27 kg) sub-junior section, while Chunky Malhan bagged gold medal in the FLY (21-23 kg) section. Other gold medal winners included, Avdesh Kumar in the FIN (up to 21 years) sub-junior section.

Cricket tourney

Rajeev Sharma scored a superb knock of 47 runs but could not save his team LIC XI from defeat at the hands of OIC XI in the Inter-Financial League Cricket Tournament played here today. LIC made 129 runs for the loss of eight wickets, while OIC achieved the target for the loss of seven wickets only. In another tie, the PEC Employees Sports Association defeated HSIDC XI by seven wickets.

Boxing meet

Sharda Sarvhitkari School, Sector 40, won the overall championship in the Chandigarh State Sub-Junior Boxing Meet held this evening at Boxing Coaching Centre, Sector 23. The meet was organised by Chandigarh Amateur Boxing Association.

Athletics meet postponed

The UT Education department has postponed the Inter-School Athletics Meet for below 14, 17 and 19 (both boys and girls) due to be held from January 21 to 23 at the Sports complex, Sector 7, due to bad weather. This was stated by Mr Karan Singh, Secretary, Inter School Tournament Committee (Boys).
