Salem not to be given death New Delhi, January 9 Information and Broadcasting Minister Sushma Swaraj told reporters after a meeting of the Cabinet that Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee approved the proposal on December 12 and the sovereign assurance was conveyed to Portugal on December 27. “India is awaiting Portugal’s response,” she said. The assurance for not applying the capital punishment clause had been given as the Portuguese law clearly states that no one would be extradited to any
country which had a provision for the death penalty. India has given its assurance under Section 34 (i) of the
Extradition Act, which would help in overcoming the difficulty regarding the death penalty. India had initially sought Salem’s deportation, but the Portuguese authorities wanted New Delhi to send an extradition request. Salem, who was held by the Portuguese authorities for travelling on a fake passport is in judicial custody in Portugal. He was arrested in Lisbon on September 18 last year along with his companion and small time actress Monica Bedi following a red corner notice issued by the Interpol at the behest of the CBI. |

Naga leaders hold
talks with PM New Delhi, January 9 The Naga leaders, had arrived in the Capital late last night by a KLM flight from the Hague, the Netherlands. “We are thankful to the Indian government for inviting us for talks. We are here for a peaceful solution to the Naga problem.” NSCN(I-M) Chairman Swu and General Secretary Muivah said on their arrival here, ahead of the first-ever talks with the Centre in India in over 35 years. The two Naga leaders were received at the airport by interlocutor K. Padmanabhaiah and top officials of the Centre and the Nagaland state government. They were greeted by a large number of flag-waiving Naga supporters. The two Naga leaders began their visit to India by paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his samadhi at Rajghat this morning but declined to take questions from the waiting mediapersons. Surrounded by security guards, the two leaders arrived at the Rajghat at 9.45 am church leaders from Nagaland and about 100 Naga students were present when the two leaders paid tributes to the Father of the Nation. Besides seeking greater autonomy, the leadership of NSCN(I-M), the largest insurgent group in the North-East, have also demanded creation of a single administrative area for Naga-dominated regions, a move which is being opposed by Manipur. The leaders, who have been issued Indian travel documents, will also confer with Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani tomorrow besides other officials during their two-day parleys. |

rushes to Shimla New Delhi, January 9 Although the main agenda of the meeting is to shortlist the candidates for the coming Assembly poll, issues relating to the campaign and public meetings of central leaders will also be discussed, party sources said. Top BJP sources told The Tribune that names of some of the candidates will be decided in this meeting itself, although a formal announcement in this regard would follow. The first formal meeting of the Election Campaign and Management Committee headed by Mr Shanta Kumar is likely to be held on January 16 either at Shimla or Dharamsala. Maintaining that the party does not “want to attach much importance to the CEC’s statement”, General Secretary and party spokespersons M.A. Naqvi said “every citizen of the country has got the right to go and participate in the political and democratic process...It is a fundamental right and nobody can curtail it.” Replying to a question on whether the Election Commission would stop Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and VHP leader Praveen Togadia from using the religion card in the campaigning, Mr Lyngdoh described Himachal Pradesh as a peaceful state and appealed to the people not to allow “outsiders to disturb the serene atmosphere of the state.” |
Sat Mahajan meets Sonia New Delhi, January 9 Among the leaders to meet Congress President Sonia Gandhi today were former PCC chief Sat Mahajan and senior leader from Mandi, Mr Kaul Singh. The two leaders are likely to be included in the campaign committee. Sources said the high command had not closed the option of having some tie-up with Mr Sukh Ram’s Himachal Vikas Congress. The state Congress is divided on the issue with one section advocating such an understanding and the other opposing it. Some party MLAs, who are supporters of former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, are likely to meet Mrs Sonia Gandhi tomorrow. |
Are school kids safe? New Delhi, January 9 Lack of confidence-building measures by the school authorities have only added to the anxiety and fear of parents. Neither the school nor the police have acted on a complaint which quotes the victim’s repeated and consistent allegations of sexual abuse against two other teachers (one of whom he has even named). The complaint even mentions the names of four other victims of sexual abuse who continue to suffer in silence. Abdul
Mabood, Director of Snehi, a Delhi-based crisis intervention centre who counselled the parents and the child told TNS here today that the centre had drawn the attention of the school authorities and the police to the allegations of sexual abuse levelled by the victim against two other teachers. In their letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, South District, Snehi has prayed for necessary investigation and action in the light of the information revealed by the victim during counselling sessions over a period of one-and-a-half months. While reminding the police to do its duty to ensure “zero tolerance for child sexual abuse”, Snehi has requested the police to start investigation immediately to save many other children, nab the culprits so that no one can dare to commit such heinous crimes in future in any other institution and protect the identity of the
victims. Snehi has also addressed a letter to the Principal of Mirambika reminding the school and its management of their social responsibility. “During the counselling session, the victim has revealed that four other children were also sexually
abused as he was abused by an accused (who is in jail)”, the letter reads.
Snehi has requested the school authorities to set up a structured redressal system to address such incidents and nab the accused at the
earliest. Snehi has sent copies of the letter to the Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime Against Women Cell and the
SHO, Malviya Nagar police station. Neither the police nor the school authorities were available for comments. The decision to send a letter to the police was taken after a three-hour long meeting with five other like-minded partners of Snehi on Wednesday. Mr Mabood voiced the apprehension that most cases of child abuse might be going unreported. He said about 4 per cent of children who come to their counselling centre in Neeti Bagh were victims of sexual abuse. “Of these, about 3 per cent children suffer child sexual abuse in schools,” he said. The child’s uncle told TNS here today that although they were satisfied with the police action on their complaint, they were worried about his classmates who were also victims of this perversion. They feel that the police should take prompt action without wasting precious time. “Inaction can be suicidal. |
