20 lakh kids administered polio drops

New Delhi, January 5
Twenty lakh children were administered polio drops as part of the Phase III of Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme on Sunday. The Health Minister, Mr A K Walia, said 30 thousand health personnel administered the drops to children below five years of age at seven thousand-odd booths and also at railway stations, bus stations, entertainment centres, airport and entry and exit points of the NCT of Delhi.

The minister said the Government of NCT of Delhi would launch a door-to-door campaign to ensure wider reach. He said 7,200 teams comprising two personnel each would fan out in the Capital to reach households over the next five days. TNS

Punjab Police to meet IA in final

Punjab Police will take on Border Security Force in the title clash of the fifth Chhattrapati Shivaji Hockey Tournament for the Dhyan Chand Cup at the Shivaji Stadium at 3 pm on Monday.

In the semi-finals on Saturday, Punjab Police nosed out Border Security Force (BSF) 2-1 while Indian Airlines defeated Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) 3-1.

In a battle of the Punjab teams, Punjab Police forged ahead in the 30th minute when Gabbar Singh converted their very first penalty corner. Immediately after resumption, Baljeet Dhillon hit home the second goal for Punjab Police.

BSF, who wasted two penalty corners in the first half, reduced the margin when Peter Tirkey scored off their fifth penalty corner in the 49th minute. Balwan Singh of Punjab Police was given a cash award of Rs 500 for his outstanding performance.

Indian Airlines rallied to knock out CRPF. CRPF took the lead in the 19th minute when Balkar Singh converted a penalty corner.

Samir Dad restored parity for Indian Airlines five minutes before half time.

Dilip Tirkey scored twice off penalty corners in the second half to help Airlines record a facile victory. Tirkey was declared the Man of the Match.

Sudha races to 1500m gold

New Delhi, January 5
Sudha of Madhya Pradesh Zone posted a time of 7.41 minutes to bag the women’s 1500m gold in the athletic event of the 20th Punjab National Bank Inter-Zone Sports Meet at the Karnail Singh stadium on Sunday.

Kusum Lata of UP Zone and Anita of Northern Zone finished second and third. In the men’s 1500m race, seasoned J P Saroya of Punjab Zone clocked 4.33 minutes to annex the gold. He was followed by Narinder Singh of Northern Zone and Som Dutt of HP Zone.

MP defeated Chhattisgarh 3-0 in table tennis, Bihar beat South 25-13, 25-11, 25-11 in volleyball, Uttaranchal beat Gujarat 55-28 in kabaddi, Punjab defeated Chhattisgarh 3-0 and East UP Zone beat Rajasthan Zone 3-1 in men’s badminton ties.

D. K. Bhatti played an all-round role to help Delhi beat UP Central Zone by 55 runs in cricket. Delhi wicket-keeper Anil Gupta took two catches and effected two stumpings.

Anand shines in K N Colts’ victory

Leg-spinner Anand Mishra ripped apart the Apex Club batting line-up with a 4 for 17 haul to help K N Colts record a 41-run victory and entered the quarter-final of the seventh Sahibzada Ajit Singh Cricket Tournament, organised by the Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce, at Pitampura in West Delhi.

K N Colts will take on Malviya Club in the quarter-final on January 15. Anand Mishra was named the Man of the Match. Apex Club won the toss and elected to field.

Trade tax check-posts net Rs 4.6 cr

The check-posts set up by the Trade Tax Department have collected Rs 4.66 crore as security amount till the end of December 2002.The mobile teams have collected another Rs 2.14 crore.

The Joint Commissioner, Special Vigilance, Mr A. K. Gupta said so much money could be collected from the check-posts up to December last year as a result of the vigorous campaign launched by the department as compared to Rs 3.69 crore in the previous year. In December Rs 64 lakh were collected. Mobile teams collected Rs 2.14 crore as compared to Rs 1.69 crore in previous year.

The number of raids conducted by the vigilance wing have also gone up to 454 by December in which 323 case of tax evasion were detected. There is a tendency to prefer transportation of goods by the Railways. The volume of goods transported through the Railways had also increased two times this year, Mr Gupta said. Goods worth Rs 316 crore were transported by the Railways on the basis of Form 31.

He said special attention was being paid to check tax evasion on goods transported via kutcha roads. The mobile team had detected tax evasion of Rs 3 lakh on a truck at the TP Nagar check-post. There were no valid documents with these goods. The goods were released after collecting Rs 1.20 lakh from the evading party, the Joint Commissioner added.
