17,000 to get polio drops

The SAS Nagar administration is all set to immunize 17,000 children up to the age of 5 years in the township against polio on January 5 as part of the countrywide pulse polio campaign.

Last minute details were cross-checked at a meeting of the health officials with the SDM, Mr Darshan Singh Sandhu, here today. Talking to mediapersons later, Dr Manjit Bains, CMO, Civil Hospital, and Dr B.S. Brar, in charge of the various primary health clinics in the periphery, stated that SAS Nagar was one of the high risk zones in North India after the recent detection of a polio case in the Sector 52 Nehru Colony.

The various primary health clinics will be working on January 5 in collaboration with the Civil Hospital and the Rotary Club SAS Nagar to ensure that every child up to the age of five years gets the two drops of immunity against polio.

Besides, the various clinic and health centres, the health authorities are putting up 61 booths all over the township to ensure that these booths are within the walking distance of the residents ‘‘Four members of a health team will be manning these booths and every child that comes for immunisation will be marked on his left little finger so that we know which child have been immunised,’’ informed Dr Brar.

Doctors attending the meeting stated that children who are otherwise not well also need to be immunised and so every parent has to be informed that even if their child is ill, he or she has to be immunised.

Polio awareness rally

About 400 students today participated in a polio awareness rally , organised by the Citizens Awareness Group in collaboration with the UT Health Department here today.

The rally, which started from Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 40, had students carrying placards and banners to create awareness amongst the public. The chairman of the Citizens Awareness Group, Mr Surinder Verma, appealed to the public to ensure that every child below the age of five years was brought to the polio centre for vaccination and complete eradication of the disease.

Similar rallies, to create awareness about pulse polio immunisation, will be organised in Government High School, Sector 39 and 38 (West), tomorrow.

DSOI secy clarifies

Chandigarh, January 2
The secretary of the Defence Service Officers Institute, Sector 36, Lieut-Col Guriqbal Singh said the reported loss of Rs 4 lakh on the sale of liquor and aerated water, incurred by the institute as brought out during the annual general body meeting, was on account of paying bar fees and excise duties.

He said that prior to the Western Command taking over the institute, liquor procured from civil agencies was being served, for which bar fees of Rs 2 lakh and excise duty of Rs 2.44 lakh were paid to the Excise Department.

MOH challans 11 persons

Chandigarh, January 2
Coming down heavily on those violating sanitation bylaws in Sector 8 and Sector 15, the Department of Medical Officer Health today challaned 11 persons.

Those who were challaned have been caught while not throwing garbage at the designated places in the sector. Dr G.C Bansal, MOH, warned that anyone found throwing garbage at a place other than the designated one would be challaned.

Gopal to lead city football team

Gopal Thapa of DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, will lead Chandigarh junior boys (under-19) team for the 39th Junior National Football Championship for BC Roy trophy to be held at Jammu from January 3. This was disclosed by Mr Ravinder Talwar, president, Chandigarh Football Association. The team is ; Mansa Ram, Gurpreet, Rahul, Vikas, Munish Pathania, Ankit Malik, Anuj Kumar, Mukesh Kumar, Inderpreet Singh, Harvinder Singh, Ram Bilas, Sumer Singh, Navin, Vinay, Jatinder Kumar, Sunil, Ashwani Kumar, Parveen and Chetan Thakur.

Mr Rakesh Bakshi, Surinder Kumar and Darpan Negi will accompany the team as officials. Chandigarh will play their first tie on January 5 against Uttar Pradesh.

Boxing meet

The Chandigarh Amateur Boxing Association will hold the 17th Chandigarh State Sub-junior Boxing Championship at Boxing Coaching Centre, Sector 23, Chandigarh, on January 11 and 12. During the championship, Chandigarh state sub-junior team will be selected for its participation in the 18th Sub-junior National Boxing Championship to be held at Kolkata from January 24 to 28.
