Krishak Shiromani Samman for 2 Punjab farmers

Two Punjab farmers Mr Mohinder Singh Grewal of Kanganwal village of this district and Mr Sukhpal Singh Bhullar of Ghuman Kalan village near Bathinda have been awarded Chaudhry Charan Singh Krishak Shiromani Samman for the year 2002 for their outstanding achievement in agriculture and allied sector.

The award, which was presented to them by Mr Ajit Singh, Union Minister for Agriculture, during a function to celebrate Kisan Diwas at New Delhi to commemorate the memory of late Chaudhry Charan Singh, former Prime Minister, includes a citation, a shawl and a turban.

Mr Hukam Deo Narayan Yadav, Minister of State for Agriculture and Corporation, Government of India and Dr Panjab Singh, Director General, ICAR and Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education were among these present on the occasion.

Mr Mohinder Singh Grewal, an ex-servicemen started farming on scientific lines in late sixties after getting training from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar and Department of Animal Husbandry, Punjab, in different areas like bee-keeping, poultry farming, chick sexing, hybrid seed production, fresh vegetable production and seed and fresh flower production.

He gave special attention to marketing of his farm produce. He sold it directly to the consumers as well as to different private and cooperative marketing agencies at state and national levels. He has also been actively associated with professional organisations of farmers and was president of the Punjab Kisan Club for about eight years. He is also a prolific writer and has been continuously sharing his experiences with people through television and Punjabi newspapers. He has also written a book in Punjabi giving the details of his innovative techniques for a guidance of other farmers.

Mr Sukhpal Singh Bhullar is a living example of successful diversified farming and is a well known grower of fruits, including kinnow and grapes, vegetables, soyabean and tomato. He has also successfully cultivated the latest chilli hybrid Ch-I, and Ch-3 evolved by Dr Jarnail Singh Hundal, vegetable scientist of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana.

Prof gets national award

Dr Major Singh Randhawa, a lecturer in physics at the Government Polytechnic for Women, has brought laurels to the city in the field of technical education by winning the Rajarambapu Patil National Award for promising teacher for creative work done in technical education for the year 2002 among polytechnics.

The award was presented to him on December 27 at the 32nd national convention of Indian Society of Technical Education (ISTE) held in Karnataka. Dr Randhawa is already a recipient of the ISTE National Award — 1999 for best technical paper published, three appreciation awards from the Directorate of Technical Education and Industrial Training, Government of Punjab, and awards of honour from many organisations like the Shaheed Memorial Sewa Society, Punjab Agricultural University, the Ludhiana Citizens’ Council and the Punjab Youth Forum.

Dr Randhawa is a well-known educational analyst, author of four books, including ‘New directions in technical education: Present scenario and future strategies’ and over 100 research papers published in journals of national and international repute.

MTSC to organise competitions

Ludhiana, January 1
Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women, here will organise various events on the college campus from January 2 to 4 to mark the new year. Declamation, poetical recitation and on the spot poster making competitions will be held tomorrow. Mr Ashwani Sekhri, Minister for State of Industries Tourism and Cultural Affairs, will be the chief guest for the morning session.

Shabad gayan, vaar gayan and sugam sangeet competitions will be held on January 3. Various home science competitions will also be organised on the same day. Mr G.S. Aujla, ADGP, and Mr S.M.S. Bhullar, Director General of Police, will be the chief guests for the morning and evening sessions, respectively. Mr Raja Singh, Chairman, GRD Pioneer Texla TV will be the guest of honour. The exhibition of posters will be inaugurated by Dr L.S. Chawla, National President IDPD, at 12.30 p.m. on January 3.

School honours students

Machhiwara, January 1
Shakti Public Senior Secondary School honoured two of its students — Jarnail Singh and Ranjit Kaur — who had secured first and second positions, respectively, in the state in the Class 10+2 examination conducted by the Punjab State Education Board in March, 2002, at a function here today. Ms Narinder Kaur, Secretary of the Punjab School Education Board, gave away the prizes.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms Narinder Kaur congratulated the school managing committee for its achievement in the field of academics and sports.
