Mercury dips as rain lashes plains Chandigarh, December 31 The night temperature at Shimla dropped to 0.4° C, according to the Meteorological Department. Other places in Himachal also reeled under cold wave conditions with Sundernagar recording 0.2° C, Bhuntar 4.4° C and Solan 4° C. Chandigarh and the nearby areas of Mohali and Panchkula were lashed by rains, forcing the cancellation of two flights from here. The Indian Airlines flight to Goa and the Jet Airways flight to Mumbai stood cancelled due to bad weather, airline sources said. Many trains in the region were also reported running late due to fog at some places. Reports of rain were also received from places including Ambala, Kurukshetra, Sonepat, Hisar and Sirsa in Haryana while light to heavy rains lashed Jalandhar, Patiala, Ludhiana, Phagwara and Bathinda in Punjab. The widespread rains in the region have brightened the prospects of standing rabi crops, including wheat, gram, oilseeds and barley, agriculture experts say. The city had a chilly night, recording a low of 6.2° C while Ambala had a low of 7° C. Parts of the Kashmir valley were reeling under piercing cold wave, with Srinagar reporting a low of -1.5° C. Yesterday, the low there had dropped to -4.1° C. Amritsar and Patiala also had cold nights recording respective minimums at 5° C and 6.4° C. The Met Office has forecast moderate rain or snow at many places in Himachal while
lightto-moderate rain or thundershowers have been predicted at many places in Haryana and at some places in Punjab during the next two days.
