Grant to ‘akharas’ for buying mat
Our Correspondent

Sonepat, December 31
The Haryana Government has introduced a new sports policy. Under this, it would give 75 per cent grant to the organisers of ‘akharas’ for purchasing a Rs 3-lakh mat for practising on it before taking part in the national and international meets.

This was stated by Mr M. S. Malik, Director-General of Police and president of the All India Wrestlers Association, on the concluding function of the three-day Haryana State Wrestling Meet here last evening. He said that wrestling meets were being organised on the mats in foreign countries whereas these were held on sand and earth in our country. The state government, he said, had taken a lead in giving the grant for purchasing the mats and encouraging the wrestlers to participate in international meets.

He also lauded the success of Haryana’s sportsmen in various national and international meets and said that this was the result of the new sports policy introduced by the government, which, he said, had enhanced the amount of rewards and given other concessions to them.

Mr Malik also stated that the wrestling meets also encouraged justice and this had led to the decrease in crimes. He asked the district administration to construct the sports stadium at the district headquarters for organising the national and state meets. He also said that the sportsmen of Sonepat, Rohtak and Jhajjar had created records in the national and international meets during the past few years. Mr Malik gave away the prizes to the winners of the meet on this occasion.

New Delhi, December 31
Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) edged past Tamil Nadu XI 1-0 in the fifth Chhatrapati Shivaji All-India Hockey Tournament for the Dhyan Chand Cup at the Shivaji Stadium on Tuesday.

The match was played under constant drizzle, and as a result, the match was played at a slow pace. The only goal of the match materialised in the 17th minute after the interval when Jolen Topno pushed the ball in, after a sharp move down the left flank. The goal came after five abortive goal-scoring attempts by the CRPF off penalty corners.

The CRPF custodian Robindro Singh effected two saves off penalty corners by Tamilnadu late in the second half. Wednesday’s fixtures: Northern Railway vs BSF (11 am); Indian Airlines vs Delhi XI (1 pm); Punjab Police vs Air India (3 pm)—Shivaji Stadium. OSR
