Death due to TB, not jaundice
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, December 24
Health Department officials have claimed that the death of 70-year-old Mohinder Kaur, resident of the Agwar Ladhai locality, Jagraon, yesterday, was due to tuberculosis (TB) and not jaundice.

Dr Balbir Singh, Senior Medical Officer, Civil Hospital, Jagraon said:” According to the investigations, Mohinder Kaur died due to tuberculosis. She had been getting the treatment for tuberculosis for the past two months but TB drugs induce jaundice in some cases”.

But the son of the deceased has alleged that his mother had been suffering from jaundice for the past one month and doctors lost hope as her condition deteriorated in recent days.

As many as 23 patients suffering from jaundice have been admitted to various hospitals in Jagraon town recently. The disease reportedly spread due to mixing of sewer water in the drinking water supply.

Dr Balbir Singh said the worst-affected area was near Adda Raikot. “The condition of the 23 patients is stable. The health officials from the Civil Surgeon office, Ludhiana, took several water samples on December 18 and the result is awaited. We are conducting door-to-door surveys and the residents have been asked to boil water for drinking. The residents have been distributed chlorine tablets”, Dr Balbir Singh claimed.

Meanwhile, residents of the area have complained that they have requested the municipal authorities several times to take adequate steps to check the mixing of sewer water with the tap water but of no avail. One of the residents said: “Despite repeated requests, the authorities have failed to check the supply of polluted water and to get the garbage lifted from the affected area. Unfortunately, the authorities wake up when it is too late”.
