Vested interests want new SMO to go

Kalka, December 22
Dr Kamla Singh, gynaecologist, has taken over the charge of SMO, here. But immediately after the taking over of the charge, some people started trying for her transfer from here.

There had been no gynaecologist in the Civil Hospital here. for a long time and there was a demand for one. The hospital caters to the needs of residents of the Kalka, Pinjore, Mallah, HMT, Doon and Raitan areas. Besides, residents of adjoining industrial town of Parwanoo also prefer Kalka Civil Hospital.

Dr Kamla Singh took the charge about 15 days back.

People allege that private practitioners have formed a lobby and are now trying to get Dr Kamla Singh transferred from here to save their own business.

According to information available, the lobby is seeking the help of influential political leaders for the purpose.

Taskeen, Kinshuk win tennis titles

Taskeen Bains and Kinshuk Sharma brought glory to Chandigarh by winning titles in the AITA ranking tennis tournament, which concluded at Patna this afternoon. As per reports received here, Taskeen emerged winner in the under-14 and under-16 sections while Kinshuk bagged the title in the under-14 section.

Taskeen outplayed Daksha Mulley of Maharashtra in both age groups, while winning the under-14 title at 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 and 6-3, 6-4 in the under-16 section. Kinshuk made short work of Allan Gomes of Gujarat, winning 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the boys under-14 section.

Britannia campaign: The “best wishes” campaign launched by Britannia for the Indian cricket team for the World Cup today witnessed a massive response here today at Sector 17 and in front of various schools and cinema halls.

The “Britannia Khao World Cup Jao” campaign has already become quite popular with children and youths. Today, the signature campaign lasted more than two hours, with boys and girls in cricket uniform attracting the public.

They wrote fantastic slogans in the form of wishes, including “Yes you can win, you can win, if you play like a team”, “Come on — beg, borrow or steal, we want the cup on Indian wheel”, and “You must win the cup with josh and hosh, tumhare saath hain 100 crore.”

A schoolkid advised the Indian cricket team — “No fix, only six”. Tomorrow, the signature campaign will be held at Sukhna Lake.

PEC XI win: An unbeaten knock of 70 runs by Satish Chaudhary enabled Punjab Engineering College employees cricket team to beat the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, cricket team by seven wickets in the fourth City Beautiful invitational cricket tournament, played here at the Cricket Stadium, Sector 16. In another tie, Government Press, Sector 18, defeated Chandigarh Housing Board XI by five wickets.

Football tournament: Mohali Football Club will organise the first Jarnail Singh memorial open football tournament from January 2 to 4 at the football ground, Phase VIII, SAS Nagar. Those interested may contact BK Flour Mills, SCF I, Phase II, SAS Nagar, at phone No. 223338.

Sanjay Public School win :Sanjay Public Senior Secondary School, Sector 44,  defeated Gian Jyoti Public School, SAS Nagar, by nine wickets in the Milo cricket tournament played here today.

CCA to hold tournament: The inaugural Kesar Singh Anand memorial cricket tournament will be organised by the Chandigarh Cricket Association (affiliated to the Haryana Cricket Association) from December 29. Entries close on December 24. Those interested can contact Kamal Mehra at phone No. 654857.

Signature campaign ends

The signing of best wishes campaign for Indian cricket team by Britannia ended at Sukhna Lake with a prize distribution function here today. Hundreds of people who visited the lake conveyed their wishes to the team members.

Organised by Balaji Event Organisers, the seven-day-long signature campaign collected thousands of entries under “Britannia Khao World Cup Jao” scheme. Children dressed up as Indian cricketers added special attraction to the concluding ceremony.

The first prize of the contest was won by Gali, a student of Mount Carmel School, Sector 47, while the runner-up trophy was bagged by Ms. J Sekhon, Principal of Ajit Karam Singh International Public School, Sector 41. Deepak Singh was adjudged the winner in Hindi category. Surprise gifts were also given to the kids on the occasion.

Education Dept, GMC register wins

The Education Department and the Government Medical College here today defeated the Government Press and the Sports Department, respectively, in their initial league matches of the 4th City Beautiful Invitation Cricket Tournament.

Education Department opener Rajesh Kumar with a score of 57 helped the team pile up 149 in the allotted 25 overs.

Darshan of the Education Department took 4 wickets, including a hat trick. Kishan sent in a fiery spell, claiming 3 scalps of the Government Press.

The Government Press could manage only 125 runs in the allotted overs with 31 from Suresh and 17 from Darshan. Sanjeev and Raghunath claimed 3 wickets each of the Education Department. Rajpal took 2 wickets.

The Medical College defeated the Sports Department by 52 runs.

Sanjeev Kumar of the college scripted a fine innings of 68 and was helped by Harish with 26 and H.S. Khandula and Sanjeev Senior 18 each to post a massive total of 200 in the allotted overs.

Replying to the mammoth total, the Sport Department was bundled out for 148 with Harish Sharma contributing 27 and Manoj 26.

Harish Sharma displayed all-rounder skills, claiming 5 wickets.

Volleyball meet: The Junior State Volleyball Championship for girls and boys will be held at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, on December 28 and 29.

Players born on or after January 1, 1985, will be eligible to participate.

Selection for the national championship to be held in Guntur Andhra Pradesh, will be held during the championship on December 26. The national championship will be held between January 10 and 16.

SSB on night patrol

In the wake of an unprecedented increase in incidents of burglaries by an organised gang in the southern sectors of the city and adjoining areas of SAS Nagar, the Chandigarh Police today decided to deploy a company of the Special Security Bureau (SSB) on night patrol in these sectors.

The company of the SSB, which had earlier been deployed at Burail Jail, has been replaced by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Already two companies of the CRPF have reached the city for deployment at Burail Jail and border posts.

An official said the police had identified at least 12 vulnerable points along the border with SAS Nagar.
