BSF jawan killed in militant
attack Srinagar, December 13 A BSF search party carrying out a raid in the forests came under fire from militants for around 15 minutes resulting in the death of a soldier and serious injuries to another, the sources said. Security forces retaliated but the militants managed to escape in the dense forests, they said adding that a search was on to nab the ultras and the BSF reinforcements had been rushed to the spot. The deceased jawan was identified as G. K. Dyemari; Both the personnel belonged to the 8th batallion, they said. Earlier, in a pre-dawn attack a CRPF camp came under fire in the Gagran area of Shopian in Pulwama district from militants who fired rifle grenades at the camp. The grenades failed to hit the intended target and there were no reports of casualties on either side, the sources said. No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attacks so far. JAMMU:
Four hardcore militants were today eliminated by the security forces in three separate incidents in the Jammu sector on Friday. Defence Ministry sources said two militants were killed in an encounter with the security forces at Mahore area of Udhampur district, one each in Kandi area of Rajouri and Surankot in Poonch. Large quantities of arms and ammunition were seized from the slain rebels. |
Snow, killing of ultras reduce
infiltration Jammu, December 13 Official sources said even in the case of undetected infiltration there had been a gradual fall. According to the sources, two factors have been responsible for this. First, poor visibility coupled with snow in the upper reaches of north Kashmir has slowed down infiltration, in Poonch and Rajouri areas the post-harvest season has made the intruders easily visible to the security forces. Secondly, more than 150 infiltrators were killed on the LoC during the past three months and this has forced the intruders to rethink their strategy. The sources claimed that international border fencing has also affected the rate of infiltration. However, a senior police officer said the Pakistani agencies have succeeded in smuggling arms and ammunition into the state in large quantities. Informed sources said militants have been asked to lie low for sometime and wait and see the effect of the Mufti-led state government’s “healing touch”. |

RSS morcha wants delimitation
exercise Jammu, December 13 In a statement issued here today co-chairman of the State Morcha, Prof. Virender Gupta, said after the completion of the Census constitution of a Delimitation Commission had become mandatory as the Jammu region deserved more seats in the 87-member Assembly. At present, the region has 37 Assembly constituencies. He criticised the Chief Minister for not taking up this issue on a priority basis along with the implementation of the Wazir Committee report. Professor Gupta urged the coalition government to provide proper representation to the youths of the Jammu province in the state services. He said at present there were only 10 per cent employees of the Jammu region in the civil secretariat, whereas their share should have been 50 per cent on the basis of the population and the area. The morcha leader expressed dismay over the way the Chief Minister had given jobs to a handful of youths, who were kins of those killed by militants in the Jammu region. He demanded that job to at least one member of every family affected by the Pakistani border firing and those disabled be given
immediately. Professor Gupta also demanded that the cash relief being given to border migrants in Jammu be enhanced to the level of the Kashmiri migrants. He also impressed upon the need to provide alternate accommodation to border villagers who had to suffer severe losses owing to Pak firing and shelling. |
Bar
association members hold
demonstration Jammu, December 13 The Judge has been transferred from the Karnataka High Court to the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. The lawyers raised slogans against the posting of what they called the tainted judge and said it was “unfortunate” that a Judge of “disrepute” had been sent to Kashmir. Today was the third day of protest in which normal functioning of the High Court and other courts in various parts of the state was paralysed. The Bar Association announced that all lawyers would boycott the court presided over by the man from Karnataka. The association leaders have already submitted a memorandum to the Governor, Mr G.C. Saxena, and the state government urging them to refuse approval to his transfer. Under the state constitution, Governor’s consent to the transfer was mandatory. The lawyers said if the transfer was not stayed it would mean violation of the provisions of the state constitutions. |
