J&K MLAs vie for Cabinet berths
Tribune News Service

Jammu, December 12
Several Congress legislators and Independent MLAs, aspiring for a berth in the Council of Ministers headed by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, have been camping in Delhi for the past two to three days to convince the AICC leadership to recommend their names for inclusion in the ministry.

The nine-member Council of Ministers was expected to be expanded soon after Id-ul-Fitr but Mr Sayeed could not meet the Congress President, Ms Sonia Gandhi, as she was preoccupied with the Gujarat Assembly poll. The Mufti left for Delhi yesterday where he would try to meet Ms Gandhi to finalise the list of the Congress MLAs to be inducted in the ministry.

Informed sources said the Mufti would go by the recommendations of Ms Gandhi regarding the matter. The Congress leadership has not finalised its list on two counts. First, it wanted to know from the Chief Minister about the size of the ministry he planned to have. Secondly, several Independent MLAs have been trying to secure support from the party leadership.

The Congress leadership has imposed a condition. It wants the Independent MLAs first to join the party and then their names could be recommended.

Sources said the Chief Minister wanted a bigger team to share the heavy workload. The sources said in view of the critical financial position of the state, Mr Sayeed might not include more than nine to 12 legislators in the next expansion which is likely to materialise between December 17 and 30.

As far as CPM legislator M. Y. Tarigami is concerned, the Chief Minister has decided to talk to the politburo leaders to persuade them to allow Mr Tarigami to be inducted into the Cabinet.

The Chief Minister has approached the Centre for sending back the state IAS officers who had been sent on deputation.

In addition to this, two posts of Secretary, Finance and Secretary, Industries are lying vacant. Once the government fills these posts, a chain of transfers will follow.

The “no-work” clampdown follows a call for a three-day token strike by the Jammu Bar Association here yesterday.

At its meeting yesterday, presided over by its president Ashok Vijay Gupta, the association had passed a resolution saying: “The Bar Association of Jammu has viewed with serious concern the reports appearing in the media regarding the proposed transfer of one of the Judges of the Karnataka High Court, facing allegations of misconduct, to the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir.”

The resolution called upon the authorities to set up a judicial commission to look after the transfers and appointments of Judges. UNI
