Roller skating to figure in National Games Chandigarh, November 25 Expressing his gratitude to the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandra Babu Naidu, and the Indian Olympic Association, Mr Pradeep Ganeriwal, president of the Roller Skating Federation of India (RSFI), told this correspondent over phone from Kolkata that the maiden entry of the sport in the National Games would give it a fillip. He said the RSFI would give its whole-hearted support to the organising committee in making the event a grand success. The Roller Skating competition would be held in the MG International Rink, Visakhapatnam, from December 15 to 20 during the games. Mr Inderpal Singh, a founder member of the RSFI, said though earlier the committee had only recommended speed and artistic events to be included, but lately, with persuasion by officials from north India, roller hockey had also got entry. He was also of the view that students aspiring for admission to various professional colleges should also be given credit for their achievements in the sport by the respective state sports departments. Ms Madhu Bahl, Principal of KB DAV Centenary School, Sector 7, said, it was a great news for the skating community that now the sport would get a national recognition. Ms Bahl said for the past more than three years her school had been regularly holding national camps of the sport apart from conducting the Indo-UK skating test matches and the CBSE National Skating meet. Meanwhile, confusion prevailed among the Chandigarh-based skaters since the Chandigarh Skating Association, which had hardly conducted any worthwhile skating activity during the past few years, was not clearing the names of members for the National Games, while its counterparts in Haryana and Punjab were active in selecting the teams for the games. |
