Polio drive: Going through the motions
Tribune News Service

Faridabad, November 21
Although the district administration claimed that over 5.10 lakh children up to the age of five years were administered polio drops and the target touching 116 per cent in the four-day pulse polio campaign concluded on Wednesday, the success of the drive is not above loopholes and hurdles.

Despite the claim of the teams engaged in the campaign, it is reported that several families were not visited by the teams in urban and rural areas. Reports from Mewat and other rural areas indicate that lack of awareness and education among people had been a major constraint in this regard. As a result, parents of many children did not take much interest in getting polio drops administered at the booths set up by the Health Department.

It is also reported that some of the volunteers and members of the team, which were given the job to visit house to house during the campaign, did the formality of putting the remark by chalks outside the main gate of several houses. And they randomly asked if there were children residing there.

According to some residents in Sector-14 and 16 here, the pulse polio team did not enquire about children in their houses and had put only remarks by a chalk outside, suggesting that the house had been visited.

It may be recalled that Haryana is among those states where polio cases have been detected despite several such campaigns carried out in past some years. The district authorities were engaged in the four-day programme, which covered 5,106,21 children in two phases.
