Buffalo swallows spoon, operated upon

Ludhiana, November 18
A team of veterinary surgeons of Punjab Agricultural University have removed a spoon from the chest of a buffalo after performing a surgery for 45 minutes.

The surgeons namely Dr N.S. Saini, Dr Arun Anand, Dr S.K. Mahajan and Dr Mandeep Chowdhary removed the spoon after operating through ribs and sternum bones.

The farmer had brought the buffalo from a village in Sangrur district to the clinic after noticing the tip of handle of the spoon emerging from the chest.

Dr Saini said the spoon might have gone into the stomach, diaphragm or chest after the buffalo swallowed it accidentally. It appeared as swelling on the left side of the chest for one year and ruptured six months ago and was continuously discharging pus since then.

Dr S.S. Singh, Head of the department, said this was a rare case.

Minister denounces corporal punishment

A free check-up and concessional surgery camp was inaugurated by the Education Minister, Mr Khushal Bahl, at Dewan Hospital, Sangat Road, Civil Lines here yesterday. After the inauguration of the camp, school and college students spoke eloquently on burning issues of the day. A student of Kundan Vidya Mandir spoke on “Intoxication”, while a student of Rajindra Model School spoke on the miseries of schoolchildren — heavy bags.

A student of SDP College shared his viewpoint on female foeticide.

Dr Narottam Dewan of Dewan Hospital elaborated on the changing scenario in the field of surgery. The speakers and hospital staff were presented with mementos.

Later, speaking to the media, Mr Bahl said the setting up of elementary directorate would improve the quality of school education.

He expressed concern over the issue of heavy school bags. He assured the students in the direction to relieve students of the burden.

Mr Bahl said he denounced corporal punishment and stringent action would be taken against those teachers who indulged in afflicting such punishment. He also said impetus would be given to Punjabi, as it was the mother tongue.

The government had started a crackdown on those taking tuitions, he added.

He further said 180 teaching days were a must in an academic calendar and the teachers ought to spend five to six hours a day in colleges to improve academic standards.

Impressive show by schoolchildren

Ludhiana, November 18
New Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar, Ludhiana, held the school’s prize distribution function-cum-cultural programme here on Sunday. Mr S.K. Sharma, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana, was the chief guest. Mr Sunil Maria, president, school managing committee, presided over the function. The function was attended by more than 1000 guests, parents and students. The school’s news bulletin, titled “The Torch” was also released by the chief guest and the president.

The function started with Jyoti Prajawalam. It was followed by Vande Matram and a cultural programme in which following items were presented: jungle dance, group dance — chhoti si asha, Assamese folk dance — Ek Kali Do Pattian, dance drama — The Ganga, Dandian — Radha Kaise Na Jale, Mini Dandia, Solo dance on Punjabi song “Naag Saamb Lai Julfan De”, Bhajan — Kanha Re, English song- Show me the meaning of being lonely, Bhand Punjab De, Krishan and Sudama, Bhangra.

The chief guest in his speech complimented the school for its results and appreciated the cultural programme.

Students were given prizes and ‘Award of Honour’ for their performance in the academic fields and extra-curricular activities. The function ended with the singing of the National Anthem.

Annual function

The annual cultural function of Shishu Vatika of Bhartiya Vidya Mandir was organised on Monday. It was inaugurated by Ms Chander Mohini, Principal, Devki Devi Jain College of Education. The programme began with Sarswati Vanadna.

Ms Neena Sangar, Principal of the school, read the annual report and highlighted the activities and achievements.

A beautiful dance was presented by Nandini of KG, which was praised by the audience. Students were also honoured. Mr Satya Parkash, President, BVM managing committee, thanked the guests. Among others present at the function were Mr Mittar Sain, president, BVM trust, Mr Manmohan Bamba, Mr Madan Mohan Vyas, Mr Rajkumar Bahal, Mr Shubh Karan Jain, Mr Manoj Gupta, Mr O.P. Sabharwal and Mr O.P. Kharbanda.
