Sajal, Arshdeep win TT titles

Chandigarh, November 18
Sajal Kaushal of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, and Arshdeep of Manav Mangal High School, Sector 21, won junior boys and junior girls singles titles, respectively, on the penultimate day of the 15th Stag Chandigarh Table Tennis Championship being played here at Sector 23 TT hall. Earlier, Rajan of DAV Public School, Sector 8, added another title in sub-junior section boys. Last evening, he had won the cadet (under12) title. Sunanda, sister of Rajan, claimed the sub-junior girls singles title.

The junior boys final played between Sajal and Aditya was a keen tussle which kept the spectators as well as the players on tenterhooks. The match was streched to seven games. Sajal having lost the first two games to Aditya bounced back in the game and managed to win the third game. Again, Aditya put more pressure on Sajal and won the fourth game and lead at 3-1. At this juncture, Sajal variated his game and then there was no let up in his fine game. Finally, Sajal wrapped the next three games in a tough battle to clinch the title.

Results : all finals- singles: junior boys: Sajal Kaushal (GMSSS-35) b Aditya Puri (DAV College, Sector 10 (7-11, 8-11, 11-7, 7-11, 12-10, 11-8, 11-7).

Junior girls: Arshdeep (Manav Mangal-21) b Guneet Kaur (Bhavan Vidyalya, Sector 27) 11-2,11-8, 11-6, 5-11, 9-11, 11-8. Sub-junior boys: Rajan (DAVP-8) b Sumit Kumar (Manav Mangal-21) 11-7, 11-8, 9-11,11-5). sub junior girls: Sunanda (DAVP-8) b Mahima (DAVP-8) 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 11-6).

Carrom tourney

DAV School, Sector 8, Panchkula team ‘A’ blanked their own school team ‘B’ to claim the boys team championship (class IX and above) in the Second Saupin’s Inter School Carrom tournament, played here at Saupin’s School, Panchkula. For the winners, Raman, Sachin and Vikrant won their respective singles matches with ease from Ritesh, Varun and Amit, respectively.

In the singles matches for boys section, those who made it to the third round are Raman, Puneet, Ritesh, Mukul, Sachin, Robin and Vikrant. In the boys section (up to class VIII), those who entered the third round are Mohit Saharan, Sumit Garg, Rishi, Sahil Sood, Varinder and Harveer. In the matches for girls (up to class VIII), six eves made it to the second round. They were, Jaivee Goel, Tanya Singh, Lorraine Samuel, Tanya Mahajan, Chandini and Priya Gupta.

Godrej cricket club

Fine bowling by Dhirender Gusain who claimed five wickets for nine runs enabled Godrej Cricket club in beating Maa Saraswati XI by 64 runs and entered the last four of the second cash prize cricket tournament organised by Haryana Civil Secretariat Club here at Panchkula Cricket grounds today.

Vivek girls win athletics championship

Chandigarh, November 18
Girls of Vivek High School, Sector 38, Chandigarh won the Inter School CBSE (Cluster) athletics championship, which concluded on November 16 here.

The school’s relay teams of 400 metres’ race (both under 16 and under 19 categories) have qualified for the nationals. Ipsita, Disha Singh, Puneet, Suneet and Inayat stood out as promising athletes. Mr W.W.O’ Kuku, the athletics’ coach, was responsible for the victory as he had worked hard and regularly with the students.

202 issued challans

Chandigarh, November 18
As many as 202 traffic violators were issued challans today by the Chandigarh Traffic police during its special drive to check traffic violators, especially those who use black films and red lights on their four wheelers without authorisation.

Those in habit of using mobile phones or taking a drag while driving are also on the target list of the traffic cops. Motorist who do not believe in wearing the mandatory safety helmets or safety belts would also be challaned.

The police has warned the city residents, especially the youngsters, to obey traffic rules. Penal actions will be taken against the violators whosoever commits any cognizable offense. This will be besides challaning the violators under the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act. This was stated in an official press release of the police here today.

Today the police had set up 21 special nakas in various parts of the city, including outer roads. As many as seven nakas were set up in Sectors 10 and 11only. It must be mentioned here that these two sectors are famous for the gheri route. Yesterday, 352 traffic violators were issued challans.
