New Delhi, November 16
To celebrate the ‘Golden Jubilee of Handicrafts Resurgence in India’, the Development Commissioner of Handicrafts, Ministry of Textiles, today organised an international seminar to highlight the importance and need for handicrafts in India.

The seminar began with the Shilp Gurus talking of their work, their responsibilities and involvement in their craft and their craft community. Well-known specialists from India and other Asian countries as well as representatives of International organisations with a lifetime involvement in crafts are attending the session. The entire event is sponsored by the Development Commissioner of Handicrafts. It will be implemented by the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts in co-ordination with the Crafts Council of India.

Expressing her views at the seminar, Ms Tinoo Joshi, Development Commissioner of Handicrafts, said: “We are very proud to honour the 10 Shilp Gurus who have taken out time from their busy schedule to be with us in this movement of reviving handicrafts in India. We realised that the craft industry had taken a back seat since quite a while and through this seminar we will be able to achieve concrete results and our mission will be accomplished as well.” To ensure that the works of Shilp Gurus are seen by the crafts lovers, the Development Commissioner of Handicrafts has also organised an exhibition displaying their works beginning from November 17 to November 20.
