Parliamentary panel visits PGI

Chandigarh, November 8
A seven member Central Parliamentary Committee today visited the PGI and held discussions with the Director and senior functionaries of the institute.

Seven of the eight-membered committee, accompanied by Secretary-level and other senior officers arrived at the PGI this morning. After a scheduled visit to the Advanced Paediatric Centre, the members decided to visit the new OPD , accompanied by the Director, Dr S.K. Sharma. The committee is learnt to have expressed satisfaction over the smooth running of affairs at the PGI.

While Dr Alladi Raj Kumar is the Chairman of the committee, the other members are Mr Bhagat Ram Manku, Ms Maya Singh, Mr A. Ahmad Khan, Mr Devi Pratap Singh, Mr C.O. Paulos, Mr Vijay Singh Yadav and Mr B. G. Pandey.

The committee members held a meeting with the PGI authorities later in the afternoon to discuss issues pertaining to the functioning of the institute. The annual report and audit and accounts report placed before the Parliament earlier was also discussed at the meeting.

Gaurav upsets Tarun

In Friday’s matches in the 19th NK Duggal Memorial Chandigarh State Senior and Junior Billiards and Snooker Championship, in the senior snooker section, an upcoming junior player Gaurav Nagpal vicotry over second seed Tarun Kumar 3-2 was a major upset. In the first frame Gaurav missed a easy black and gifted the frame to Tarun. But in the second frame Gaurav showed good temperament and played a cool game and made the score 1-1. In the third frame, Gaurav showed good potting, an excellent good ball control to make the score, 2-1. Down by 1-2, Tarun bounced back and did not give any chance to Gaurav and made the score 2-2. But in the deciding frame, Gaurav was too good for his opponent and won the final frame and the match. The final scores were 44-52, 40-37, 68-34, 12-48 and 57-29 in favour of Gaurav Nagpal.

In the second match, top seed Sandeep Duggal was seen in an excellent form. Duggal was too good for his opponent Ashu Gupta. Duggal beat Ashu in an one-sided affair 3-0. In the first frame, Duggal was not showing good potting but Ashu was unable to avail and lost the first frame 53-21 to Duggal. But in the second frame, Sandeep in his first visit made an excellent break of 37 points and then Ashu played too good safety shots but again Duggal bounced back with a break of 37 and outlast Ashu in the second frame with two breaks of 37 points. The score of second frame was 88-7. In the third frame Ashu played good snooker but was not able to stand against the experience of Sandeep Duggal and lost the third frame and the match to Duggal. The final scores were 53-21, 88-7, 59-31 in favour of Sandeep Duggal.

In another match Manav Dhawan was too good for his opponent Anjay, Manav defeated Anjay 3-0. The scores were 49-20, 65-43 and 40-29 in favour of Manav Dhawan.

In senior billiards, Manav Dhawan was too good for his opponent Pawan Manav defeated Pawan 254-129 in an one-sided affair.

In junior snooker Gagan Makkar’s excellent potting and cue ball control helped him to outclass Gitansh Malik, 3-0. The scores were 65-10, 46-3 and 64-5 in favour of Gagan Makkar.

In another match of junior snooker, Bunny beat Rajat Jain 3-2 down by 2-0. Bunny showed an excellent come back and defeated Rajat Jain 3-2. The scores were 36-43, 43-45, 44-31, 52-49 and 48-24 in favour of Bunny.

In another match, Sumit Talwar beat Sandeep Sharma 3-0 in an one-sided affair. The scores were 52-28, 72-29 and 46-26 in favour of Sumit Talwar.

Rowing trials
The selection trials of the rowing team of Chandigarh for participation in the 32nd National Games-2002, to be held in Andhra Pradesh, will be held at the Sukhna on Saturday November 9 from 2 pm. This was announced here by Mr T.C. Gupta, President, Chandigarh Rowing Association. The trials will be held for the events of single scull, double scull, coxless pairs and coxless fours. The trials will be held for both men and women. Interested candidates should report at the Lake Club, 1.30 pm.

Lawn tennis trials
The Sports and Youth Welfare Department of Haryana has decided to send a lawn tennis team for participating in the All-India Civil Services Lawn Tennis Tournament to be held at Indore from November 18 to 23.

The Director of Sports, Haryana, said here today that the trials to select the state’s lawn tennis team will be conducted on November 9 at 4 pm in Gymkhana Club Tennis Court at Panchkula.

PU clinch kho-kho title

Panjab University, Chandigarh won the North East Zone Inter University Kho-Kho Championship for men for the year 2002-03. Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Punjabi University, Patiala and Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, got the second, third and fourth positions respectively.

The results:

Panjab University b. Punjabi University 21:10; Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar b. Kurukshetra University, 14-11.

The results of Panjab University Inter-College Ball Badminton (M&W) being played at PU grounds, Chandigarh are as under:-

SGGS College, Chandigarh b Government College, Sector 46, Chandigarh (29-27, 29-28); DAV College, Chandigarh b DM College, Moga, 29-15, 29-17.

MCM DAV College for women, Chandigarh b GGS College for Women, Chandigarh 25-29, 29-22, 29-33 Govt. College for Girls, Sector 11, Chandigarh b Dev Samaj College for Women, Chandigarh 29-14, 29-04.

The results of PU Inter-College Table-Tennis B-Division (Women):

DAV College of Education, Abohar won the Panjab University Inter-College Table Tennis B-Division (Women) Championship for 2002-03. SDS College of Education for Women, Lopon got the second position.

The results: SDS College of Education for Women, Lopon b Dev Samaj College of Education for Women, Chandigarh 3-0. Amarjit b Abha 11-8, 15-13, 11-4; Kanwaljit b Kiran (11-7, 11-4, 11-9); Pratibha b Meghna (11-3, 11-7, 11-6).

DAV College of Education, Abohar b GHG Harprakash College of Education For Women, Sidhwan Khurd, 3-2.

Councillor takes oath of office

SAS Nagar, November 8
The SDM, Mr Darshan Singh Sandhu, administered the oath of office to the 27th member of the Municipal Council, SAS Nagar, Mr Yograj, here today.

Mr Yograj took the oath to serve the council and abide by the Constitution of the country.

The ceremony was held in the presence of the president, Municipal Council, Mr Kulwant Singh, the MC Executive Officer, Mr Jai Kishan Sharma, and the Additional Executive Officer, Mr Sarabjit Singh.

Mr Yograj was elected on October 20 from Ward 14 after defeating Mr S.P. Bains.
