‘Higher education getting expensive’
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, November 1
“Higher education is getting exceedingly expensive and soon it will go out of the reach of students from poor families”, was the common perception of speakers that addressed activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at the inauguration of ABVP’s 32nd conference here today.

Mr Ramesh Pappa, All-India general secretary of the ABVP, said the youth had an important role in nation building. “Whenever any change in society takes place, youths are actively involved in the process. Students wanting to do something for the country are told that they are indulging in politics. Is it politics to ask authorities to take back fee hike? Moreover, politicians addressing students’ rallies generally urge them to participate in nation-building activities. What a contradiction? Most of the students coming out of colleges are unconcerned about the country as there is a sense of frustration among them over the enjoyment issues.

“The ABVP will take out a rally in New Delhi to express its resentment against the directionless education system that provides very limited employment opportunities. With MNCs entering Indian markets, small industries are also closing down. The government should frame economic policies that ensure more employment opportunities. A memorandum will be presented to the Prime Minister over this issue,” he said

Mr Chander Mohan, editor of a daily, was the chief guest on the occasion. He said the students should also go to the Education Minister’s, house to present a copy of the memorandum to him. By reducing aid to colleges, the government was striking at the roots of higher education. Somehow, government feels that education was not its responsibility. The nonchalant attitude would close the doors for higher education for many poor, but deserving students, he said

Mr Subash, state secretary of the ABVP, spoke about the activities of the parishad.
