24-hr medical helpline launched

The first round-the-clock medical emergency helpline started here today with the flagging off of an ambulance by the Minister for Urban Planning and Development, Mr Raghunath Sahai Puri.

Donated by the Mohali Helpline Society, the ambulance will be available for residents of the township who need to be transported to hospitals in emergency situations or accident victims who need to be rushed to hospital. The Society has employed drivers for the ambulance who will man the mobile number 9814209572 and on receiving a call reach the destination.

Badminton Tournament, which began here this morning in Chandigarh and Panchkula.

Results : Girls under -14: Capt Amol Kalia School, Naya Nangal b Mukat Public School, Rajpura, 2-0: DAV Public School, Amritsar b Geeta Adarsh Public School 2-0; DC Model School got a walk over from Baba Gandha Singh School, Barnala; and Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School got a walk over from Guru Nanak Mission School, Paonta Sahib.

City spikers shine

Chandigarh spikers bagged three of the four titles in the XII Navodya Vidyalaya Schools National Volleyball Championship, which concluded this evening at Jawahar Navodya Vidyalaya, Sector 25, Chandigarh.

Ms Neeru Nanda, Adviser to the Administrator, Chandigarh Administration, was the chief guest. City won boys’ junior, girls’ junior and boys’ senior titles, while it lost to Hyderabad for the girls’ senior titles. Hyderabad eves were runner-up in the juniors’ section while Lucknow boys remained runner-up in junior as well as the senior’s section.

Slow cycling meet

Poonam and Lakshmi bagged first place in the junior and seniors’ section of the Avon Slow Cycling Competitions held at Government Girls Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 18. Ms Rajesh Minhas, Principal of the school, gave away prizes.

Results: Avon juniors: Poonam 1, Pinky 2, Sunita 3.

Avon seniors: Lakshmi 1, Madhu 2, Sonia 3.

Rowing championship

Gurpreet Kaur, a student of the MCM DAV College for women, Sector 36, bagged first place in the women’s single scull event in the All-India Inter-University Rowing Championship for men and women held at the Sukhna Lake. Julee Verghese of Kerala University was placed second, while K. Vasavi of JNTU, Hyderabad, was third. Parveen Kumar and Vipan Kamboj of Panjab University, Chandigarh, secured first place in double scull event. PU rowers excelled in coxless fours event also, when the team comprising Karaj Singh, Jatinderjit Singh, Sukhpal Singh, Amit Malik won first place in coxless four section.

CHB auction nets Rs 4.5 cr

Chandigarh, October 30
The Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) today netted Rs 4.5 crore by way of auctioning 30 built up booths in Sector 48 and 49. A total of 20 booths were auctioned in Sector 49 and another 10 were auctioned in Sector 48.

The CHB had put up 30 booths for auction and all were sold off. The highest bid was Rs 17 lakh while the average price worked out to be Rs 15.50 lakh. TNS
