Eight top university hockey teams of north zone will vie for top honours in the Ist Guru Gobind Singh Inter-University Hockey Tournament (boys) to be organised by the Ludhiana Sports Welfare Association (LSWA) scheduled to be held here at the astro turf ground of Punjab Agricultural University from November 17 to 21.
This was informed by Mr Sukhwinder Singh, general secretary of the association, here today. He said a decision in this regard was taken during the association’s meeting held here last night. The meeting was attented among others by Mr Amrik Singh Minhas, president of the LWSA, Mr Baldev Singh, national hockey coach, Mr Didar Singh and Mr Sanjeev Kumar, Olympians, Mr Gurbhej Singh, Mr Kulwant Singh Bopari, Mr Gurwinder Singh Kila Raipur, Mr Harminder Pal Singh, Mr Jagroop Singh Jarkhar, Mr Parveen Thakur, Prof Kamaljeet Singh, Mr Ajaypal Singh and Mr Randeep Sidhu.
In the inaugural match of this five-day tournament, Guru Nanak Dev
University, Amritsar, will take on Panjab University, Chandigarh. Other teams to take part in this meet include Punjabi University, Patiala, Punjab Agricultural
University, Ludhiana, Meerut University and Jamia Milia Islamia University, Delhi. The matches will be played on the patern of the international guidelines as per the Champions Trophy held recently in Germany. The two finalists will pocket cash prize of Rs 15,000 each, Mr Singh said.
Mr Sukhwinder Singh informed that to uplift the standard of the women’s hockey in the state, the LSWA had resolved to conduct Women’s Hockey League Meet in which four teams , two each from Punjab and Haryana, would take part.
The association would felicitate two (one boy and a girl) young promising hockey players every year. This year, Gaganajit Singh will be honoured for his outstanding
performance by the association on the concluding day of the tournament.
